*Can't link the vid for some reason. Here's the Link* Recently came across this vid that I believe was the product of a fairly major kickstarter campaign: Basically, this series is supposed to address female character stereotypes in games; this episode in particular deals with the damsel in distress stereotype. My thoughts: I think this series is completely unnecessary and stupid. If she knew anything about video games, she would understand that most games just use the damsel in distress stereotype to facilitate gameplay. In other words, it allows the developers to shove the story out of the way in order to focus on gameplay (see Mario or Zelda). It's funny how she references Rare, Dinosaur Planet, and Starfox Adventures at the beginning. A year prior to the development of DP, Rare obviously released Perfect Dark, a game with a strong female Protagonist. Curiously she seems to ignore this and only present evidence that supports her conclusion. Confirmation bias at its finest . IMO people like this are politically correct morons who are looking to be offended by anything and everything. They're just as sexist as the people/ideologies they claim to be combating.

I think the industry is moving away from the stereotype that a gamer is a male between the ages of 10 and 24 and needs to play characters with their likeness.
I just don't see an over abundance of sexism in the video game industry today. My wife plays all things Mario, Skyrim, Sims, Final Fantasy, and honestly enjoys playing co-op on certain FPS games. She has 2 friends (girls) that are addicted (cosplay addicted) to Zelda and Mario and have dressed as these male characters multiple times.
News flash: Sex sells. It does and there is very little we can do to change that short of practicing self discipline and teaching our children to be better. Dark, Croft, Jill, Claire, have all been advertized in a sexual way. If you are buying the games for that then I personally believe you are buying them for the wrong reasons.
Rather, as it stands, there is a great amount of guys that simply wouldn't buy say, Modern Warfare 4 if it put you in the shoes of a female soldier or even a black person. Not trying to bring race into this but I remember guys in high school that wouldn't touch GTA: San Andreas because you play a character that's black. They claimed it wasn't about the race but how they couldn't relate. Sorry, but that's sugar coated racism.
It would be nice to see a Mario game with more than the Princess at stake, like the world, or all the Toadstool people. I think he's right about facilitating gameplay. I would just like to be fighting for more than some girl in trouble. I've seen this before.

There are so many people who look at the world and see these huge problems. I think they forget that there are hundreds that have come before them shouting the same thing, expecting things to change. These people often use the phrase "change happens one death at a time". This may be true but it's used more as an excuse rather than an opinion. The excuse as to why the world isn't as good as they want it to be.
Change also happens one life at a time. The one life at a time process is a bit slower. It requires teaching and thinking and strength.
At the risk of being preachy. The only thing you are in full control of is you. Sorry but your friends, family, the government, media, and even your significant other don't have as much control over yourself as you do. In fact, their control over you is miniscule in relation to the control you have over yourself.
So the change happens with you. Every passing minute is another chance to change. If you really believe in something and aren't just spouting politically correct BS to look smart then shut up and start living your philosophy. Doing anything else is wasting the precious time you have in this world.
Sorry. If I posted this in the Science/Philosophy board I would be ignored.

I would argue that these sorts people don't actually want to see anything change. They just like to sit back in their politically correct armchairs and complain about how offended they are by everything.
It's nothing but an attention seeking campaign IMO

Oh I agree. When everything it their way they will find something new. If they can just become problem solvers... yep.

I'd say that she's right in that the women in games are portrayed as a damsel in distress more than being a strong woman, but the fact that she makes NO MENTION of the latter group aside from the final part that's gonna be in her next video apparently, where she states "developers try to flip the script on the damsel", and shows a picture from Monkey Island (A game which blatantly goes against one of the things she said about women being trapped) yet doesn't even say "There ARE games out there with powerful female characters" or the like... Blaze from Streets of Rage for one, and even in the second game, when somebody gets kidnapped, is it the girl? NOPE, it's Adam, lets see if she makes any reference to the "dude in distress"... Also, Samus Aran... 'nuff said?

Is everyone forgeting Joanna dark! Dude. That's what I was saying in my original post! Also, funny how she mentions Zelda in OOT. If she actually played the game she would know that Zelda is also Sheik, an extremely strong female character. She's blatantly picking and choosing shit that happens to agree with her worldview. It's confirmation bias at its finest.

Well she did give Sheik good mention... Said she was very formidable and even useful as Sheik, even named a sun-trope after her (The Useful Damsel), but the instant she changed back to her true form, it took 3 minutes for Ganondorf to capture her (And because if ever a female is used as leverage against a male main character, that automatically makes her a damsel)

Why did it cost so much money to make a YouTube video O.o I don't think it went towards the actual cost of the video. She used it to pay for all the games she wanted to "examine" for sexism. It's a pretty good idea if you ask. Get stupid, gullible people to give you money so you don't have to pay for games. Think I might just start a kickstarter...
