Here's a useful image that should help you use less memory on your computer and help it run faster and more efficiently. (Also, for step 7, I recommend you leave "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" checked. Because what it does when unchecked, is make your shortcuts on your desktop just plain white text instead of a shadowed one, so it is difficult to see on light colored backgrounds) (And be sure to right click on the image and click "View Image" then you can zoom in and see the full res image.) And you'll have to restart a couple of times, so just save the full res image to your desktop

Thanks foof. This works pretty well for windows 8.1 as well. Plan on doing a clean install with Windows 10 in two months though.
The "Removing Windows Features" was the only thing on there I didn't bother with just because it asks you to replace everything you turn off with "better" programs and I just don't care about that. I doubt I would notice a significant difference. However I have already done so and suggest that everyone does the same... TURN OFF Internet Explorer 11. It's been nothing but a problem for me in the two years I've had my PC. It is now a dormant hive of malware sitting on my hard drive. Do Chrome. Do firefox. Leave explorer to rot.
Did you hear their calling Windows 10 "Spartan". Their vocal interface is called "Cortana". Their new mouse is called "Sargent Major Johnson." Okay, I made that last one up.

For the removing windows features, just shut off the things you don't use. So, Internet Explorer, Games, Windows Gadgets (for the love of god disable Windows Gadgets) etc. I'd hold off on Windows 10. It looks like total crap from what I've seen. Windows 8.1 with more emphasis on tablets. Also, Firefox is the way to go. Just make sure you definitely get uBlock ORIGIN (Origin is way better. A much simpler, easier on the CPU adblocker that is far superior to Adblock Plus) HTTPS Everywhere and Noscript if you want.

I prefer Chrome over Firefox... I used to use Firefox constantly, but then it started sucking while doing things that it used to be able to do just fine, like actually working on the "Watch Later" button on YouTube

I'm a chrome guy myself, but not a big fan of Google. Favorite search engine has always been Yahoo.

I heard System 32 slows everything down too, better get rid of that... Removing that was part of a homework assignment in college. There was no fine print or anything indicating that doing that could make computing afterwards alittle difficult. Needless to say, after that particular assignment I went to the computer lab and did the rest of my assignments on the college computers and left my laptop at home. It's a pretty screwed up system when a two year program in Micro-Computer Technology never has you laying a finger on anything but a mouse and keyboard, and blindly leads you to cripple your OS. By the end of it all I was the best qualified office secretary in the state but I would be damned if i had to swap out a motherboard or install more RAM. Luckily I taught myself all that stuff before college.

Removing that was part of a homework assignment in college. What!? I think I would sue my teacher if he told me to do that!

Removing that was part of a homework assignment in college. What!? I think I would sue my teacher if he told me to do that! I laugh whenever people fall for it, because being told to delete a folder on your computer without a sound reason why and then blindly following their advice is pretty sad. Especially since they have to create a specific .bat file just to remove it. Windows by default won't let you remove it if you try to right click delete it in file search.

I was just following the instructions of the assignment. It was the FIRST WEEK of college and that was the instruction. The teacher later apologized during a lecture saying that she has since put fine print telling people to do it in the computer lab.

Little off topic but is anyone thinking of doing the windows 10 update? I heard games will run faster and you need windows 10 for the new direct X.

I'm going to upgrade day one as I'm getting it for free.
I have NEVER liked Windows 8 and have been stuck with it for the last 2 years. It's gotten better, but an upgrade is an upgrade and Microsoft has actually tested it quite a bit. I'm going to do a clean install and wife my hard drive in hopes that all my malware problems go away.
Also I'm pretty sure Microsoft is trying to unify windows 10 and Xbox One so who knows. There might be exclusive features or something. It's always nice when your devices work together.
