Odd title but every now and then I get this craving for Final Fantasy Tactics, I can't explain why it's just FFT but guaranteed once a year I just have to play it. I got that craving today and now I really want to play it.
I'm just going to listen to the amazing soundtrack and wait until the weekend so I can sit down and destroy it.
Is there any games that just come back calling for you? The game that you just get a craving for out of the blue? Final Fantasy Tactics is the only one that has that hold on me. It's not even a nostalgia thing for me because I was a latecomer to FFT, the first time I played it was on PSP. I get hankerings for games all the time but what I'm interested in is the ones that have you hooked the ones that make you play when you get the crave. The CRAVE. Listen.

My list of not so random cravings.
Don't judge me: Call of Duty (Every November) When the COD hype is at max I can't help but get an itch to play some team deathmatch. I gotta play a few matches in MW3 just to get it out of my system.
FC3:Blood Dragon (Every August) It's only been out a few years but I long to hear the soundtrack and clear the map all over again at the start of fall. It's an odd time but I think more 80s action movies get played on tv in the fall and maybe I pick up on that and get an itch only Blood Dragon can scratch.
Tony Hawks Pro Skater HD (Every July) I think I'm just nostalgic for playing this game with friends on summer afternoons when we couldn't think of anything better to do. I play the HD version because it's what most easily accessible, and most like the original.
Pokemon Blue Version (Every May) I'll be sharing the long story behind this one next month.
Star Wars Battlefront II Every time I watch episode II, I get a craving for Jedi Outcast II. Then I go play it, and remember why Battlefront II is my favorite Star Wars game, and go play that instead. JKII just isnt accessible enough to satisfy a craving without it ending in boredom. Really, watching any of the prequel films makes me want to play Battlefront II though.
Lotr:Return of the King So happy X360 is backwards compatible. Whenever my wife and I have our annual Lotr party (we marathon the extended versions) I have to play this game. It's one of the best 3D beat em ups ever made and makes you feel like your apart of the huge battles in the movie. Sadly, it's one of those games that'll never see life off of Xbox due to licencing.
There are probably more but these are the cravings I can recall following through with in the last year.

I'm someone who very rarely replays games. I appreciate their novelty for a time and grow disinterested.
When I play a game (like Dark Souls for example) I become completely obsessed with learning everything there is to know about it. After I've 100%'d the game, there's no longer any appeal to it.
Strategy games are able to pull me back year after year, however. I consider Warcraft III to be the best game ever made. If any game deserves a 10/10, that's it.
And I've been consistently interested in chess for a couple years now.

And I've been consistently interested in chess for a couple years now. This is interesting, for me games that are heavily story based tend not to get a replay from me, especially if it's choice based. The only time I replay them is if they are amazing like a movie or I guess TV Series is more suitable due to the length, I've only ever watched one series of TV twice. I replay a lot of games eventually, like Uncharted or Resident Evil but I would never replay The Witcher 3 because it's too damn big but I would find myself making new characters in Dark Souls just to run around for a bit. What I'm interested in, because you mentioned Chess, do competitive video games not keep you interested? I was pretty big on Team Fortress 2 for a while as well as Halo 3 and Reach (I still go back and play those) so I like to get competitive at games but do you not? By the way, I love Chess, I like to consider myself pretty good at it as well.

I enjoyed it but couldn't bring myself to finish it. Oblivion got me, I was big on that game for a solid year but I also had way more free time when that game came out.

I gotta play a few matches in MW3 just to get it out of my system. I'm judging you big time. Call of Duty? Pfft how disappointing... I also get the crave for CoD every year! Luckily I fought it last year and skipped it, also thanks to JMM. Is there a reason these are sorted by months? For some reason around Christmas I get the craving to play Final Fantasy XIII, I can't explain it but Final Fantasy XIII is my Christmas game for some reason. Looking forward to it! I've been out of the Pokemon loop for a while but I did buy X and Y because it felt like those games were being marketed to me, they seemed to really focus on the nostalgia. I enjoyed it but I don't think any Pokemon game will ever beat my obsession over Silver or Fire Red. This brings back memories... I loved The Two Towers and Return of the King. Played them so much. I can remember just playing through them and unlocking the characters and levelling them up and redoing missions. I want it in HD!

I would find myself making new characters in Dark Souls just to run around for a bit. I'm NOTORIOUS for restarting RPGs with different characters in Dragon Age, Dark Souls, Skyrim (eww), and Mass Effect. The curiosity I have about the classes that I didn't pick is stronger than my curiosity about the rest of the game, haha! By the way, I love Chess, I like to consider myself pretty good at it as well. Yes, competitive video games keep me interested as long as they require a lot of thought. I played CoD4 competitively for a long time because I played it like a strategy game rather than a twitch shooter. Rocket League is one of my favourite games at the moment as well. JMM and I have been playing chess with each other for a couple years. If you make a chess.com account, I'd be happy to play with you. www.chess.com/members/view/SilentSputnik

MGNoxaYeah, I play COD once a year and it's been MW3 since it came out. A friend got me Ghost and Advanced Warfare but what I was trying to say it aht when hype is at it's highest, I go play an old COD game and tell myslef that it's like the new one (becasue it is) and it prevents me from buying the latest. Which incodently only gets played by friends for about two weeks. They are labeled by month because I have a memory that can narrow it down to the week, of when I play these games. I'm also one of those people that if a game is very deep, I play it once and then maybe again in a decade. I have yet to start a 2nd playthrough of Skyrim, KOTOR, etc just because I see it as a time investment that's already been invested into. That's is why I seem to crave games that can be beaten in a few hours, or is set up to cater to people who just want to play a few matches. Lotr is one of a few good licence games that will likely never see life off of it's original console. That is really something our generation is going to have to do something about if we care about our kids experiencing some of our favorite games.

I don't emulate games but this is why emulation is really important. In the next decade or two we will lose the original games if nothing is done about it.

Yeah, I really can't remember what game it was, it was definitely on the 360, but I would always play it and restart and make a new character, never finished it but it was a lot of fun. You interested in Overwatch? I'm a console gamer primarily so I'll be picking it up on PS4. I'm really hyped for it, looks so good! Widowmaker is Waifu! I will take on all challengers and destroy them!

Except emulation is illegal. Yeah, I know we all do it, but my go to example on why we need to do something now, Goldeneye 007, is getting harder and harder to find as Nintendo sweeps the internet serving cease and desist orders to places like coolroms.com and the like. I'm honestly not sure where I can get a ROM for Goldeneye 007 today. Believe me. As soon as I can get in contact with the right people, I'll let everyone know what they can do to support this cause. My current proposal is after 30 years, if nothing is done to preserve certain games, nothing planning to be done, or they are caught up in licensing issues nobody will touch, they should be made public domain. Made available over the internet, to be played using whatever emulator that supports it. Nobody will make any money off of it, it's just due process that Goldeneye shouldn't be doomed to sit on thousands of aging N64 cartridges for eternity. For example, if the only way to see the Mona Lisa was on it's original canvas, most of the population would never ever see that work of art. For generations to come, going back to a 20+ year old console to play a few "obscure" games on the word of a bunch of old people is comparable to flying to France to see the Mona Lisa. Most games I speak of arnt the Mona Lisa of gaming but many games are works of art and should be treated that way. Bare with me. Between streaming/dvd/bluray/youtube/cable today there exists ways for my grandmother to see every single feature film shes ever layed eyes on in her 76 years alive. Whether she cares to see ALL these films or not is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, I can watch my grandmother smile and tell me stories as shes reminded of her youth while we watch a very obscure cowboy movie from the 50s play on tv. Are my grandchildren going to play Goldeneye with me when I'm 76? Right now, I'm not so sure. That stuff is important me, and it's a unique kind of outrage that a very famous game like Goldeneye, a game that has made countless top ten lists for it's greatness, is stuck on the N64. People see a charm in going back and playing those old consoles but that's something that happens way more on the internet than in real life. Nobody asks why it's the only game on the Top Ten FPS of All Time list that we arnt playing on a current gen hardware. When the question is asked, someone says "legal issues" everyone shrugs, and the conversation is over. It's such a, such a sadness that you think you can play Goldeneye on a PC. Get real!
