I had a close friend who was a devout christian but a nice one. he didn't agree with homosexuality but he didn't condemn it and treated them with the same respect he'd treat anyone else. He also had an amusing view of creationism and evolution. he said "I don't believe in evolution but I want to get paid when I'm older so I'm just going to have to accept it" that always made me chuckle one of the few things in school that did invoke a positive feeling

True. Some of the nicest people I know were brought up in the Christian/Catholic/Jewish faith and are great people. I'm well aware that this may be a character fault on my part. But... When these same people start talking shit on people of different race or sexual orientation and when questioned, simply, if not lazily, use "gods word" as the reasoning I find "God" as an idea become a transparent excuse not to think.
These people have been given 10 clear rules, they break 3-5 of them on a regular basis and look to the darkest corners of their holy book to find things to attack others for.
I'm no more tolerant or understanding of these people as they are of me but I wish I had a couple hundred dollars for every time sexist, racist, or otherwise closed minded intolerance was brought to the surface from people I thought I knew.
All I want is for people to step into the next generation of themselves as human beings. The time of change has come. We are here and standing on the brink of a revolution where past evils are tolerated and we are more considerate of peoples feelings. It is right here, and it pains me to witness it NOT happen because a few people are too afraid to step out of comfort and let it something beautiful happen. We as citizens of 1st world countries live in consequence free environments. Any change, is good change now. The world, in many ways is already changing for the better. As a species we have begun to realize how we can live with each other and off the land without destroying each other or compromising the promise we have to succeed.

The arguing takes place all year long and during the holidays we all get to sit at the diner table and awkwardly "have fun" and eat good food. God I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. It's not even my family. It's my wife's family. Oh and they like me. It's my wife they give hell and I gotta suffer though it.
Sorry about that guys.

I think it's pretty much a requirement to dislike your spouse's family.
