I have been a Lord of the Rings fan since I saw Return of the King in the theater in 2003. After playing the stellar tie-in by EA I knew a LOTR game could be done right when put capable hands and I have been met with disappointment in every subsequent release of a LOTR video game since then. It seems 10 years later a glimmer of hope has arrived with Shadow of Mordor. Set for release on current and next-gen consoles by the end of 2014, this game is a non-cannon game that takes place between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. While I've gotten my hopes up over these kind of action/adventure LOTR games in the past, this is the first one I've been genuinely hopeful for. Between the apparent use of the Assassin's Creed II engine, Arkham style combat, open-world gameplay and the fact that they are showing full, highly polished bits of the game, this early in development, I think this game is on the road to becoming a very solid action/adventure title. Especially when you consider it's still 7-9 months from release. There is already talk about making this WBs next big game franchise in the vein of the Batman: Arkham game series and it's already wildly apparent that they are putting that kind of time and money into the project. I would love to see this series expand beyond the realm of Mordor and into familiar places in Middle-Earth.

I wasn't fortunate enough to see the LOTR movies at the cinema (I was only a little'un)however I did have all three on VHS. I think I watched fellowship of the ring about a million times. Anyway, after the disappointing war in the north I'm glad to see that there is hope for LOTR in the video game world.

Yeah even if it's just an Assassin's Creed clone set in Middle-Earth I could love it. I never liked that idea that just because it's set in a now cliche fantasy world, every LOTR has to be an RPG, hack n slash, or strategy game.
Just the idea that they are breaking cannon and coming way out of left field in creating a half-wraith hybrid FOR THE SAKE OF FUN is a huge turn on for me.
Bigger worry: Ubisoft has accused them of outright stealing the AC2 engine. I hope they don't give this game trouble. I would hate for them to have to scrap what they have already done, still meet the release deadline and we end up with a LOTR themed Colonial Marines.

Sadly, this is a next-gen focused game so the Nemesis system won't be nearly as deep in the X360/PS3 versions. Let's hope that and the graphics, are the ONLY difference. Still looking for a great game in this one but I will always have that fear of a sub-standard version coming to current-gen for the sake of luring sales in on the merits of the next gen review scores. Can't tell if that demo was on 360 or Xbone but it was one of those two. Time will tell. fingers crossed.

I'll likely just pick it up for PC then, if I have to upgrade my graphics card then so be it, though I don't see how the nemesis system could be toned down on the PC version, so I should be all good
