Anyone here plan on picking up Arma 3? The alpha is out in about 3 days and the game only costs around $32 at this point. Might get it if anyone here does.
Some cool A3 vids:

Arma II, while sporting one of the decade's most popular mods, was itself a pretty terrible game. UI was crap, controls were...sticky (if that's the right word), and gameplay was pretty "meh." What I'm trying to say is the core game was nothing to blink at, but the community turned it into the amazing experience it is now (huge clan battles and DayZ). I probably won't give Arma III a go, since DayZ is getting it's own stand-alone title now, and let's face it: the only reason anyone is still hearing about Arma III, is because of DayZ. Reading that back, I sound like a huge negative nancy lol

Reading that back, I sound like a huge negative nancy lol I disagree with pretty much all of that (agreed on the terrible UI though), and I hate DayZ. The gameplay was specifically designed with slow-paced, tactical gameplay in mind, so of course you're not going to have the same freedom of movement present in arcade shooters. How exactly are huge clan battles not apart of the core gameplay experience? Sure they use a few sound/realism mods to spice things up, but the core game is still very much identical. The potential has existed since launch; it's just a matter of finding the right group of people to play with. As for your last comment about A3 and DayZ, tell that to ShackTac... IMO it's a great game that's a little rough around the edges. It's a true FPS sandbox.

I still think Red Orchestra is the best FPS sandbox.

I still think Red Orchestra is the best FPS sandbox. Care to elaborate? Absolutely. It is the most realistic WW2 game simulator sandbox type game. It also has extensive modding, and a large multiplayer fan base. The tanks and vehicles in the game drive and shoot like they should, and you can be the commander, main gunner, machine gunner, driver, or loader in the tank. There's no 3rd person switch when you enter a vehicle, so you can open hatches and stuff to see better, and the cost of being an open target. It also has it where if you get shot just a couple of times, you're dead. Tanks are damn near impossible to take out without proper equipment, and it has the feel and atmosphere of being in a tense war zone with shells exploding left and right, and bullets whizzing by your head. That's my elaboration.

You can pick up Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 (The best in my opinion) for about $10 USD as of now on Steam, or if you wait or scour the internet, you should be able to pick it up for less.

Some degree of realism in certain games is good, makes you feel more involved I feel, but only if the game is set in such a way that realism is to be expected (I.E. current bad first person shooters, not to name any unnameables...) But if you're going for a fantasy setting or something like that, then the further detached from reality the better I find
