I've never really liked the GTA games. It's not so much the violence and profanity that bothers me, as it is the "Open world" selling point. GTA may be "open" in terms of you get to blow up who you want, where you want, and when you want, but it fails to give you ANY options other than fucking someone over. This game FORCES you to be bad. Even if it's for a "good" reason. In that respect, GTA is an incredibly linear game that markets itself as a "Sandbox." Just words on a page. Even though I am looking forward to it, I appreciate your sentiment. I like to be "good" first and then be "bad" on the next playthrough. (Skyrim, Fallout, etc.) You're correct. If you follow the story, you are indeed forced into being a thug. So to beat the game you have to follow the prescribed story with no alternative. At least in the other games I mentioned you can beat/finish the game with whatever morality that you choose.

Just words on a page. that's pretty deep, man. kinda makes me angry knowing that Rockstar has been fucking with me for the past few years. did I really want to blow up that old lady? did I really want to mug that biker? did I really want to drive 200 miles an hour down a 30 street? did I want go into the drugs trade? the answer is no. but I did anyway because I forced into it every time. all I wanted to do was visit the empire state building but no I had to kill a police man First. I genuinely feel violated...

I was as close to a saint as I could be in GTA, yet I loved running around naked in Saints Row 3 and whacking people in the nuts with an RPG in tow.
Does this make me a bad person?

Yes. It makes you a very bad person pedro. Kidding.
I personally don't care about the story. This will be the first GTA that opens the world up for you from the beginning so it's possible to avoid the story entirely if you really want. Still there are ways to flip off people at any time so the game still has that GTA attitude even outside the story. You will have to be the judge of weather or not the game forces you into the thug life. All joking aside.
I want this game. My wife has a strong morale objection to me playing any GTA game though. She doesn't like the ability to hire prostitutes or kill "innocent" people at random. Not too fond of the language either. I argue that you don't have to do those things and the game doesn't force you to. I tell her my favorite thing to do is drive cars off rooftops, get in car chases with cops, and complete side missions that unlock me better vehicles and health/armor bonuses.
Very rarely does a video game world get as dense and fascinating as it does with the GTA games. Every game has an open-world these days but unlike Assassins Creed or Saints Row these game worlds are based on real places that feel real and very familiar. We have all seen and heard about these places in movies, music and television. Most places you see in movies taking place in New York, Miami, Los Angeles you can go to in the GTA games. GTA does it better and I hope I get to play this in september.
