I have the same weakness. I've bought Resident Evil three times now. I just hope they do right by that kind of brand loyalty and remake Resident Evil 2 right.
This brand haunts me. I don't buy anything post-RE4, but I find I keep buying the same classic games.

I don't buy anything post-RE4, but I find I keep buying the same classic games. Love hate relationship? I have something similar with DmC: Devil May Cry, I hate the new characters, setting and gameplay but there's something about it that keeps pulling me in and makes me want to watch the cutscenes and story play out. Also I'm a massive RE fanboy, like massive. How much of a fanboy? When the RE6 trailer showed Chris and Leon fight, I lost all self control, that fight got me so hyped that nothing could bring me down. Haha.

Resident Evil Zero has Wesker Mode too. I wish the RE remake added some more content. We got some costumes but a Wesker mode would've been awesome. I think we would know by now if this also came with some goodies for RE remake, I wish we would of got Jill in her battle suit instead of BSAA.

As far as the love hate relationship goes.... There is love but no hate. Not for what I buy. I don't buy a game because is has "Resident Evil" on the box. I've come to learn that just alittle bit of research goes a long way to shield you from expensive disappointment. I only buy a Metal Gear if Kojima is directing, a Fallout if Todd Howard is directing, and the like. I don't buy video games as much as I buy works of art from my favorite modern artists in the industry. If video games are art, than Mikami, Howard, Miyamoto, Hill, Tajiri, Kojima, etc. I wrote a whole article about that. If you really want to know "What happened?" to your favorite franchises, it's usually an internal problem (or absence) with the creator. You can read the article here. I like it better when my relationship with a series ends the same time it's relationship with the original creator ends. It's usually their vision I fell in love with and when it's over, best to move on.

For me after a while the creation should be allowed to live on it's own. Star Wars is a great example of this, the George Lucas ones are the worst and the best ones don't involve him in the directors chair and some of the Star Wars video games are absolutely brilliant doing more for Star Wars than anything George Lucas could dream of. I like Resident Evil because of the characters and Mikami has had less success with other games, Shadows of the Damned and The Evil Within, but Resident Evil went on to have massive success even with poor reviews RE6 sold around 5 million copies (could be 4M) Also look at Sam Raimi with Spiderman 1 and 2 are great, 3 is garbage. Joss Whedon with Avengers 1 is great, 2 less so. Sometimes creators leave for the good of the brand. The games may change sometimes too much other times not enough and it's a pale imitation but just because Kojima won't be doing MGS6 doesn't mean I won't give it a shot. Bayonetta was directed by Hideki Kamiya and Bayonetta 2 was Yusuke Hashimoto and Bayonetta 2 was better in every way. Kamiya created Devil May Cry and didn't touch 2 and 2 sucked but they learnt their mistakes and 3 was the best in the series, yeah Itsuno directed 2 and 3. I understand where you're coming from and I think it takes a lot of willpower to quit a franchise the same time as the creator but you're missing out on some great games. BTW you missed out on the best Fallout games by ignoring New Vegas. I'm sure Fallout 4 will beat it in terms of gameplay but man... New Vegas has some of the best side missions and characters ever.

Lucas has a wonderful imagination, and can be a brilliant writer. We've seen that in the Empire Strikes Back, and the Indiana Jones series. As a director I have come to the conclusion that Star Wars (1977) was a very happy accident for Lucas. Limited budget probably helped that movie far more than hurt it. I wish Lucas had some writing credit in Episode VII but Disney threw all his ideas away shortly after buying Star Wars. Maybe for the better, but we'll never know.
Raimi is great and you could tell the studio had his hands tied when making Spider-man 3. That movie was originally supposed to have only Sandman and New Goblin as villains but Raimi had to shoehorn Gwen Stacy, Venom, and Eddie Brock in after the script was finished, because the studio knew Venom would sell the movie better than Sandman and the expected New Goblin. It made for a bloated experience, and it's obvious Raimi's hands were tied at some point during it's creation. We may never know, but some odd one-off scenes in Spider-Man 3 make me wonder if Raimi wasn't trolling the studio by sabotaging the whole Venom arch. Think about it. Cut those three characters mentioned above out the film, and you have a worthy end-cap to the trilogy.
Joss Whedon also had his hands tied to an extent with Avengers 2, and it's only going to get worse. There is SO MUCH universe each Marvel movie has to adhere to now and I refuse to believe it was Whedons choice to put so much future movie foreshadowing in Avengers 2. Look at Guardians of the Galaxy. It had next to nothing to directly share with the established Marvel Cinematic Universe and it was a really solid and entertaining film.
On Bayonetta and DMC: Yeah, some games improve drastically when in the hands of new people. Look at Elder Scrolls and Fallout. They didn't really catch their stride until Todd Howard was involved. Still, if I loved Fallout before Howard, I wouldn't dare pre-order Fallout 3 or buy it without at least reading a review. Same goes, I would be a fool to ignore reviews/sales and pass on Fallout 3 just because Feargus Urquhart didn't direct it.
When artists are left to their own devices to create what they want to create, the way they want to create it, that's when we get their best.
I would never tell anyone to flat-out skip MGS6, or even Halo 6, but I would implore them to not pre-order, and take a "wait and see" approach to a game that isnt being made by the same guys who made the previous games you loved. I see no better approach. You save money and face. Remember the guy that tattooed a picture of Jar Jar Binks on his back before Episode I came out? Yeah. Don't be that guy.
I also don't miss out on any games because of this. Sure, I'll skip something like Arkham Origins. That game wasn't being made by the same people so I didn't pre-order it and eventually my "wait and see" approach had me scared away from paying $59.99 for a game with an aggregated score of 73% on gamerankings.com. This is in contrast to the 90+% the fist two games received. I should note that this approach had me buying Halo 4 as well. It's reviews had it about on par with Reach, so I gave it a shot, and it still disappointed more than it impressed.
The only thing I'm missing out on is a hype train and a launch party. I'm not completely prejudice. I'm a gamer. Every game is innocent until proven guilty. When the original creator isnt involved, I don't pre-order, and I don't get hyped. That doesn't mean I don't buy it, but I vote with my dollars better than anyone I know. Feed what you want to flourish.
P.S. I may have "missed out" on ALL the Fallout games, but that was due to budget, and I'm sure I can go back and play them any time I want.

Fair enough.
I just want to mention the Raimi thing again. Joss Whedon didn't want Black Widow but he had to use her, Raimi didn't want those other characters but he had to use them. Raimi clearly dropped the ball, yes he had too many ingredients but it's almost as if he purposely did some of the terrible things in that movie. Did Raimi have his hands tied? Yes. Did he also have the tools to make a decent movie? Yes.
I admit the Joss Whedon thing with Age of Ultron is a little different. Clearly a lot of stuff happened behind the scenes, there was a lot of arguments about Hawkeyes family and farm as well as the side story featuring Thor. So that was more than Joss Whedon's fault, not a good example for me to use.

Their might be a little shame on Raimi for sabotaging the stuff the studio forced him in to, but I respect him for making the movie he wanted. He was very bold in taking something he believed would be unintentionally bad, and putting some intention in it. This is all assuming he did sabotage the film of course. I like to think Peter Parker dancing down the sidewalk was as painful (and funny) for Raimi to shoot as it was for us to watch.
What franchise has been hurt the most? If I had to pick one, than I would say Resident Evil has been hit pretty hard. After RE4 the franchise dug itself into a rut it has yet to escape. Mikami may have last his survival horror touch over the years but like Kojima with Metal Gear, I think if he could have continued making Resident Evil games we might have seen the end by now, and would probably think of the franchise quite differently.

That is my concern. I know it's all about money in the long run but just some examples: Did we need a Tony Hawks Pro Skater 5? Couldn't Activision have just left Neversofts legacy of nine solid skating games alone. They could have taken the engine they had from the THPSHD remake and put a different name on it. That way it wouldn't have any success or failure by comparison, association, or relation to the previous games. Games like THPS5 just make us long for the golden age of the series. Do we need a Far Cry 5? Why can't they take all that they have learned and make a new Ip? Speaking of which, remember Crysis? What if that was called Far Cry: Future War and we got a Far Cry game every year because of the tag team Crytek and Ubisoft Montreal would form. We would be sick of it and it would create a rift where people would like one and not the other. Both franchises started with the same director, but he went on to make Crysis, and both did well by avoiding over-saturation and association with one game that is so distinctly unique from the other. The brand milking would be obvious. Ya know, there used to be a time where if your favorite franchise has it's name on a box, you'd buy it, because you knew it would be good. Almost every franchise finds it's niche and catches it's stride in it's respective genre, but nothing lasts forever. Games like Bioshock or Half-Life can go down in history as something truly special because greed hasn't fueled an over-saturation. Would Half-Life 2 be so special if we were anticipating Half-Life 6 next year? Maybe to people that knew the series before it's 4th iteration, but most would only see the latest in the series, and judge the whole on that. If your not shooting to make something the best in the series, or tieing up loose ends left by the previous games, than maybe that game and it's name can wait. I see so many great story's get hobbles by plots being stretched to make room for intentional loose ends so the sereis can continue for the sake of continuing. I see it in Halo, Resident Evil, and all the Marvel movies and it kinda makes me sick. There is no means to an end. No value. No incentive to get invested. It's all noise.
