I've been playing Brawlhalla -- a 2D fighter in the same vein as Smash Bros -- for a couple months now. I've managed to break into the top 0.5% of players on the leaderboard, so now I feel like I have a solid grasp on the game. Unlike Smash Bros, it has quite simple mechanics. There's a few pieces of technology, but nothing that's particularly overwhelming.
A good litmus test for determining whether or not I'll like a fighter is by quantifying the amount of time players are in control vs waiting patiently for their opponent's combo to finish. I've always considered games like SF and MK to be boring pieces of trash because of how long you spend completely helpless in your opponent's attack strings. Smash Melee -- on the other hand -- allows players to be in control 100% of the time by using DI (directional influence), slightly changing the direction that they get hit in. Brawlhalla has no DI, but it also doesn't have combos that last over 2 seconds or so. The result is a very neutral-heavy game which I enjoy a lot.
Each character/'legend' has two of the six weapons in the game along with 3 unique heavy moves for each weapon. As a result, each legend feels distinct from one another. However, familiarity with each weapon makes the game very easy to pick up because you'll feel comfortable with multiple characters who share the same weapon.

The only complaint that I have at the moment is that the meta at the high level of play which I'm at is very defense- and parry-oriented. Due to the relative ease of dodging away from attacks and countering, players who deeply understand the game tend to not approach one another.
Brawlhalla is in open beta, available to everyone with a steam account and a computer that isn't a total potato.
