This week instead of posting lots of different works I have chosen just one, but one good one! "Las Meninas has long been recognised as one of the most important paintings in Western art history"Why is it so great? you my be fooled as I was when I first look at this painting in thinking that the subject is the maids in the middle of the painting but it is not! Las Meninas translates to The Maids of Honor which is only there to throw you off what this painting is really about. The subject of this painting is actually the viewer! i.e. you!! or in this case the king and queen. If you look to the left of the door way you will see a mirror (we know it is a mirror because it is brighter than the other paintings) reflected in this mirror is the king and queen. To the left of the mirror we see the artist himself! he is painting this through the eyes of the sitters (the king and queen)! This was very far ahead of its time and is one of my favorite paintings, what do you guys think?
