I'm going to come off a bit like a Xbox 360 ad here but I wanted to express a feeling I had the other night...
Following the announcement of the Xbox One I have a new appreciation for my Xbox 360.
Now, when I hold the Xbox 360 controller in my hand and look at the console, I think about how far we have come in 8 years. After all the Red Ring of Death hoopla and motion control gimmicks you have one of the better consoles ever created. That is all I see.
A game console has one job. Provide interactive entertainment. How is that accomplished? Games, games, and more games. Not just that, but quality games. That is what Xbox 360 does best and better than any platform in existence. If you count its backwards compatibility (as limited as it is) it is a console that plays the bigger part of my personal video game career from 1994 to today and dabbles in everything from Sonic, Street Fighter, Space Invaders and Pac man, to Perfect dark, Pinball, Ninja Turtles, and Tetris.
When you consider it's extensive library of First-Person shooter and Action/Adventure titles what you find time and time again is what builds up to be the best hardcore game console to ever exist. Despite the unimaginable sales numbers of the Wii or the might of the PS3, Xbox 360 won this generation.
So people, I urge you to take a step back and observe what you have this E3. There will be alot of talk about new hardware and lots of pressure to run out and buy (pre-order) the next new thing but at the end of the day, the legacy of games the Xbox 360 holds is staggering and should be observed before we move into a new generation.
There is a more than likely chance we may never see a stand alone game console have such an extensive library that caters to every single person who enjoys interactive entertainment. Just about everything you could want on one box. No always online, no hidden fees, no limits.
It's not perfect, but it's the best we have and you don't know what you have until you don't have it anymore.
Heres to the Xbox 360.

Its funny how "you dont know what you got till its gone" I could (and probably should) make a top 10 xbox 360 remakes video. We all know there are plenty to chose from. That being said the 360 isnt perfect and nor is the games that are on it.
1. The middle button oh how I hate it! it is soooooo slow, there is too much crap on the middle button that slows it down.
2. DLC DLC DLC every new game you buy is really only half a game, the other half you pay again. This is something that will carry over to the Xbox One.
3. Noise the thing (at least the ones I have owned) sound like a jet plane taking off!
4. Games take about 10 mins to start up from the point where you press the on button to the point you are playing a game (not just on the title screen because even then you have to select a memory device.... sign in....) It takes way too long! Try this on your N64, PS2, Gamecube from on button to in game takes about 30 secs no joke.

Yeah it has it's issues but my Xbox is a new model from late 2010, a slim model. It's quiet. The middle button, I never noticed it was slow. Not slow for me. Most games I play are full. I have yet to buy a game where I felt like it was half the game it should be and the rest is DLC. No argument with number 4. It's like starting up a computer with this console.

I think one could make the argument that the PS3 was actually the better hardcore console this gen. It had free online, more hardcore/critically acclaimed first party titles, good third-party support, arguably better hardware, smaller emphasis on motion controls, etc.
Don't get me wrong I love my 360, but again the argument certainly could be made that the PS3 has been the better console. I don't think you can definitively say that the 360 "won" this generation as it's just a matter of personal preference.
Despite the great games that have been released over the past 8 years, I would say that this generation has been bad for gamers, developers, and publishers. Gaming has become a mainstream, multi-million dollar industry dominated by desperate corporate publishers who pour an absurd amount of resources into their games. As a result, companies like MS, EA, Activision, and Crapcom have resorted to unnecessary DLC, online passes, subscription fees, disk-locked content, micro transactions, annual releases and numerous other questionable practices in order to nickle and dime us.
The problems I have with this gen can be summed up like this: publishers expect too much, gamers get too little, and developers aren't allowed to innovate. Games just aren't made for gamers anymore. They're made for the largest demographic possible (casuals) in order to make the most amount of money. We have no reason to believe that this trend won't continue next gen. I'm counting on it getting even worse, and for that reason alone I won't be buying an Xbone, PS4, or Pii U.
Overall there have been great games released during this console cycle, but dangerous precedents have been set in the industry that are bad for everyone.

MMCC0203, you put a finer point on just about everything I said.
I think this generation is the peak of a mountain with a foundation made on Atari 2600, ColecoVision and Intellevision. Mainstream, game dedicated consoles. 360/PS3 has it's roots dug into the hardcore gameing population and thus said dedicated gaming foundation. I can not say the same for PS4/XONE right now. Yes, there will be a Halo5, MGS5, COD5, RE7 etc. but with this next generation, gaming support and multimedia are on a level playing field.
The video game industry is about to force a dramatic change unto itself by going after the people who had no intrest whatsoever in a PS3/360 do to it being a "game console". I know for a fact Microsoft is going to push hard to convince people that the Xbox One belongs in the home of every person between the ages of 16 and 60 this holiday onward.
I agree with you on your finer points. This generation foreshadows some of the crap thats going to alienate the long time gamers like us. I fear the future console generations will cater to the family that uses the console COD, Madden, FIFA, Facebook, TV and nothing else.
I guess what I am saying is that we are at the peak of the game dedicated console mountain in history. The view from here is great. Look how far we have come. A few times we wanted to climb back down but we know that this is as high as we are going to get and from here we can see in the distance, an unsure future.

We are not at the peak at all, right now we are waiting for better things to happen that is not the peak! Weather the things we are waiting on will happen or not is a different story.
We still have things like GTA 6, Evil Within and Dark Souls 2 to name a few. Things will get better there is no doubt about that, the platforms may not.

Yeah Francis is a character he does. An honest character though. My initial reactions mirror his alot of the time but I calm myself down and state my concerns with an ammount of sophistication. Acting like this is real life gets you ignored or laughed at for the wrong reasons. I once did a thread on the Perfect Dark Xbox forum where I raged like it was my last day on earth and I had nver done it before. Were the Xbox forums maintained it would still be the most replied to topic. It was something like "Goldeneye I dont care" or something like that.
