Five things Goldeneye 007 still does better than today's modern shooters.
Local Multiplayer: The reason many of us played this masterpiece as long as we did. You could sit down on a couch with 3 of your friends and play the likes of You Only Live Twice, Slappers only, Man with the Golden Gun, etc. While you could do this with later popular shooters like Halo: Combat Evolved it was never as addictive and intense as the fast paced action Goldeneye where map memorization and steady aim where key to victory. Today all it takes is a powerful starting weapon, a good camping spot, and proper management of your regenerating health.
Endless hours of shooting your friends.
Music: Normally having a single song run on an infinite loop would spell doom for a video game soundtrack but Goldeneye's thematic tunes were a constant joy as each and every track captured the spirit and atmosphere of the level and never got repetitive or annoying. The purists will claim superiority of the fully orchestrated soundtracks found in today's best selling shooters but how many of them are as memorable as this little gem...
Yeah. That's what I thought.
Gameplay: As far as pick-up-and-play fun is concerned, Goldeneye takes the cake. An absolute noob could press start on Agent and have the controls mastered by the end of the first level. There were no limitations on how many guns you could carry, no "press X to swap weapons" no weapon cool down, long reload times, or Aim-Down-Sights mechanic required. Just point, and pull the trigger. FPS fun in it's purest, if not most refined form. Simplicity is a thing of beauty.
No grenade, no melee, no problem.
Pause Menu: While most games just present you with a pop up menu when paused, Goldeneye had you look down at 007's iconic watch where you could scroll through 3D images of your inventory, select items, review objectives, as well as the standard fare of adjustable settings, and a quit option. Oh and if you are crazy enough to find how to sync the clock with the menu, it does actually tell time. Somewhat.
Explosions: I'll just leave this here...

Happy 16th birthday Goldeneye. Here's to many more.
