TimeSplitters Rewind came to life in November 2012 when Crytek UK gave us their blessing to work on a community created mod. Since then we have evolved in such a way that we’re bringing a lot of positive attention to the franchise – something that we as fans have always wanted as it could lead to a much anticipated TimeSplitters 4.
Is Cosmetic Monetization a good idea?
An idea that we had that I spoke with Crytek UK very briefly about and they seemed interested in but will discuss at some other time is cosmetic monetization. We were inspired by the model used in Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2. We see this as a great opportunity to get the community more involved with TimeSplitters Rewind development, to generate revenue to cover server costs outside of donations and to (potentially) fund the development of TimeSplitters 4 by Crytek UK.
We’re not actively pursuing this type of model, but it was something I brought up and they seemed interested. If we were allowed to do such a thing then rest assured that none of the original content in the original games will be locked away behind a pay wall of some sort. However if a community member made a hat or we made cosmetic skin of a monkey wearing coconuts and lipstick – then that is something we could put up in to a type of Steam Workshop market. Of course you still have the opportunity to get those for free simply by playing the game too!
As of right now though the game will continue being developed as a completely 110% free game with absolutely no cosmetic monetization model at all. It’s simply something we don’t want to start working on and it be the one thing that lawyers have to get involved in telling us to shut down everything. However if Crytek UK decided that they wanted to pursue that route later on down the road then that is something we will work on then.
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One development update
One thing I definitely brought up was our desire to proceed with console development and it would hopefully be cross-platform. We are allowed to proceed with PC development and since the engine allows for it and when the time comes we can (eventually) start moving things over to the consoles. Crytek UK is interested in seeing TimeSplitters Rewind on consoles and we are too, but what we are waiting for is what everyone has to say across the board. Lawyers mainly. These things take time and it definitely doesn’t look like we are going to be told not to develop on the consoles.
For now we will continue working on the PC and the console features on the side. So we’re not officially working on console development, but we haven’t been told to stop what we’re doing.
A note that I want to make on the Xbox One that a lot of fans have been asking about. If Microsoft says that cross platform play cannot be supported, we will not stop development for the Xbox One if we are allowed to release on that platform. It just means that our plans to start the Console Wars have been put on hold for the time being and that Xbox One players will simply play with other Xbox One players.
Steam Greenlight Concept
Many of you have noticed that we are now on Steam Greenlight Concepts. This page is not only acting as our forum of sorts but also provides a lot of valuable information for us. We are currently #7 out of 1,134 games in Greenlight. We have had over 6,260 unique views and over 1,139 followers. We are at 2,452 ‘YES’ votes. 99% of our votes are at ‘Yes please’.
This is very valuable information not only for us but also for Crytek UK.
Get to know us weekly!
Starting later this week we will be doing a ‘Get to know us weekly’ post giving fans a perspective of who we are. Then eventually we will dive into the community and start asking about who you are and what the TimeSplitters franchise means to you. I have mentioned our growing interest in getting more involved with the community and finding ways to get fans involved with the project. This is just one of many ideas that we have had.
We really want to hear your feedback on everything we have covered! Please head over to our Greenlight concept page and let us know what your thoughts are.
