I've recently re-watched Blade Runner and my god...Rutger Hauer's performance!! it's stunning and brilliant and I just needed to say it. The best part is the tears in the rain scene. All of it improvised, all of it perfect.

Rutger Hauer is one of my favourite actors of all time, for reasons I'm sure don't need to be explained

Is because he's seen things we people wouldn't believe?

The flight of a half-man-half-bird, dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be, cookies on dowels, all those moments lost in time, gone like eggs of a hookers stomach

That scene alone made the movie. Batty as a character is extremely deep.
The idea of Deckard, a man struggling with losing his humanity because his job forces him to to "kill", struggling with the notion of what he should be feeling, wasting his life, coping with his decisions. Saved by a machine he's been commissioned to kill, that finally discovers it's own humanity and the value of human life is one of the most brilliant concepts executed perfectly in this film.
When batty sees Deckard holding on for dear life he discovers the compassion within himself and seeing Deckard in the literal position Batty has been in the entire film is brilliant.
In a way, Batty realized that just because a human may live longer doesn't mean it lives a full life. In his last moments this character expressed the true difference that separates the humans from the machines. He became as human as any real person could hope to be. His speech was his final act of self preservation. His acceptance of death and the idea that "all those moments will be lost in time".
I could write a book on character analysis on this film.
