THE INTRODUCTION
This week's JMM Community Theater is Stalker (1979), a Russian film from famous Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky, who brings a very dark and cold style that i like to compare to Stanley Kubrick. The movie Stalker is based on a Russian novel by the name of Roadside Picnic, but the movie and the book are almost completely different from each other. The movie is set in the post second Chernobyl accident area called, The Zone, the zone in the novel is infested with twisted radiation mutated monsters, but in the movie the zone is barren were not even a sound echos the land, but both have one thing in common though different depictions, the anomalies that reside in the the zone, left over from the accident that caused the area, The zone is also guard heavily bye military checkpoints. More differences are that in the book stalkers are people who search for pricey artifacts left over by the anomalies, in the book a stalker leads men to the famous room in the zone, a room that upon entering will fa-fill your deepest most desired dreams. Also at this point i should mention that this series has spawned a popular video game franchise known as S.T.A.L.K.E.R., but it is much more based on Roadside Picnic. So without a further a-do here is a movie that will make question art and it importance, and make you rethink your stance on human life's ongoing pursuit of happiness, here is Stalker (1979)...
IMPORTANT NOTES
This film is brought to us by Russian film outlet MosFilm, while it is the best quality of the movie i have seen it is also all in russian, though don't fret, YouTube provides subtitles in the form of their captions, though it might not be 100% accurate, its the best i could find, it also in 2 parts but that not a big deal.
