In my opinion, NASA is bad for space. Or at least space becoming a bigger part in the lives of the common man. Time and time again I've seen business men who get bored and decide to fund something space related that is really really cool but NASA refuses to let them use any of their stuff no matter how much money they offer. It's good that they are advancing science like this but they need to encourage attempts by others, not discourage it.

It's good that they are advancing science like this but they need to encourage attempts by others, not discourage it. It's not NASA turning away private space companies (like Space-X or Virgin Galactic) it's the US Government. The reason why NASA shut down the shuttle program is because Congress effectively cut them totally out of the budget. And for the ones wanted to see warp drives in your lifetime, Mars One Mission plans to put man on Mars by 2025. You might not see warp, but you'll definitely have your 1960's-style landing moments.
