This is a ridiculously difficult mate in 3. I was the only player at chess club to solve it. White to move. Black wants to play Nc4 then Nd2+. If he does that, white will have to move his king for his 3rd move, thus failing the mate in 3. So either 1.. Nc4 or 2.. Nd2+ must be prevented. The only way to prevent 1.. Nc4 is to play the forcing move Qxb3, which obviously doesn't accomplish anything. So we know black's first move is 1.. Nc4. Move 1. ?? 1.. Nc4So the question is, how can Nd2+ be prevented? The knight cannot be taken or pinned, so white's 2nd move must be a check. Move 1. ?? 1.. Nc4 Move 2. ??+ It's impossible to check the black king with the white rook on move 2, so it must be a queen check. Move 1. ?? 1.. Nc4 Move 2. Q?+ 2.. Kx? Move 3. Checkmate. I then notice that after 1.. Nc4 and 2. Qxb3 2.. Kxb3, the king is completely trapped on all sides, so if white played 3. Rd3, it would be checkmate. But for the rook to get to d3, white's first move would have to be Rd6, and it could be taken by the black pawn. Here's the animated idea: www.chesspastebin.com/2014/12/03/spenser-stockfish-2-3-1-ja-by-sputnik/So what happens if black takes the rook? If the rook is taken, then white plays Qh8 then Qa1# or Qb2+ www.chesspastebin.com/2014/12/03/spenser-stockfish-2-3-1-ja-by-sputnik2/And what happens if black doesn't play 1.. Nc4, making himself vulnerable to the queen sacrifice & rook mate? Then white plays 1. Rd6 2. Rd2 3. Rb2#. Epic.

White very much has the advantage imo, it is pretty much a queen and a rook vs a knight. The black rook is trapped, as is blacks pawn forward pawn and king. There really isnt much black can do and white has two free pieces.

Step one; Pull out your gun Step two; Point it at the opponent Step three; Checkmate I suspect that would work as well.
