Either the best or worst thing to happen to the franchise since T3. Being an old-school Arnold fan, I want this to be good. Of course it worries me to see the new terminator literally go and destroy James Cameron's original but hopefully that only serves to break the ties to the generic action movie formula the last two films were falling in line with and try to be original. Something makes me doubt it though.

There are good ways to retcon a series' cannon and there are bad ways to retcon a series' cannon. This is an example of a good way. From the looks of the trailer, the movie is going to acknowledge the existence of the previous ones, but still "reboot" the franchise.
"The timeline John sent you back to no longer exists."
I'm ok with this. As long as the movie knows it's part of something bigger, it's fine. Kind of like the retconning of Star Trek with the new movies. It acknowledged that the TV shows exist, but the timeline has changed.
An example of bad retconning would be the upcoming Stargate reboot in which Dean Devlin simply stated he'd be ignoring all the exploits of SG-1, SGA, SGU & pick up the franchise right where he left off...with the conclusion of the original movie.
Another example of bad retconning would be Disney abandoning the Star Wars Extended Universe.

Is that even retconning though with Star Wars?
I really didn't like the Star Trek movies all that much. I felt the inclusion of old spock was distracting and cheap. They were just so out there and fast paced for an audience with expectations. Being either a newcomer to the series or a person who hasn't payed attention since the 60s tv show its not a movie for them which makes me wonder how Star Wars VII is going to feel. Will it just be a flashy young-mans sci-fi, or a love letter to the fans of the first three movies?
