Hello JMM I recently re-watched your video on the evil within
After a few minuets in you said
"if dying a lot classes a game as a survival horror, then by that logic Dark Souls is a survival horror. Needless to say it's not."
so I'll direct you to this video by Jim Sterling where he points out that BloodBorne might be the closest thing we've got to survival horror in the gaming industry!
I won't ruin the video for ya by telling you everything but I would really like to hear your opinion on his thoughts

This does pretty much sound like it has the basis of a survival/horror game at it's core but a few things he said really stood out to me.
"Fact is, Bloodborne gives you just what you need to scrap by, and you sure as shit better not misuse it, or your going to have a terrible time."
Sorry but thats not quite my definition of survival horror. I survive lots of enemy soldiers in Call of Duty, but I still have to shoot them with the bullets the game gives me to scrape by.
"...a mound of decayed flesh and skulls dragges itself along an open road all in plain view of an adventurer who knows there is no way to progress accept through the hideous things ahead..."
I take from this that you have to kill these monsters to progress and can't simply evade them? Sorry for being so critical but I think this game still might have too much of a "focus on combat" to count as a real survival/horror game.
Bloodborne might "keep the spirit of survival horror alive" but I wouldn't say it's preserving it in anything like it's purist form, just presenting a more genuine take on it than recent Resident Evil games for instance.

That's what he's pointing out though it's not survival horror in it's purist form but It has survival horror elements more than what the evil within did

And the fact that in Demon's souls which is the only one I've played.
I felt like a survivor of the world rather than a hero because as he said death is waiting for you around every corner and you will lost a fair amount of your progress if you fuck up now if it installs that kinda fear in you it might not be a survival horror game but it's got the elements in it.

Well I agree with all of the above, Blade Runner 07 thanks for pointing out the not being able to evade the enemies part, I thought I was the only one who would pick up on that. I think it was a good review, I have subscribed to the guy because I think he "gets" what a survival horror is, in the video he is really just saying we don't have survival horror any more which is kind of wrong. The newest survival horror game to be released is Alien Isolation. Did you watch my Dark Souls 1 video? I say somewhere in it that its not a survival horror game.

You could argue that one survival horror game, released in a triple A game industry doesn't mean that survival horror is making a comeback.
Which I feel is pretty apt, he has done videos of him playing Alien Isolation and he rated the game highly but I feel that's reason he left it out. The only thing I know for certain is that Survival Horror lives on in the Indie Community.

Oh yeah I would in no way say it is making a come back! If we had as many survival horror games as we have zombie games then it would be making a come back. Have you heard about the Indie game called 2Dark coming out? www.2dark.cc/
