It's been a topic of discussion as of late, on how poorly some of the games we look back on fondly from our childhood have aged. I agree with most of their points here but Number 1 is a lazy joke.
I do agree that nostalgia is keeping the number 1 games from ageing in many peoples minds, but then again, most people who praise it as the greatest shooter of all time, probably haven't played it in 15 years. It might be getting uglier every year, but it still holds up from a gameplay standpoint. I don't care what anyone says.
Having recently played GTA Vice City and San Andreas, I can honestly say that from a visual stand point, those games need remakes very badly. They didn't look that good 12 years ago, and age hasn't helped them.

Actually, I'd have to agree completely with that list (especially number 1...)
As good as it was at the time, you can't argue that it's aged terribly.
Remember, the list doesn't include games that were bad right out the gate. It only includes games that were overwhelmingly positive at the time, so it's not like they're saying it's a bad game, they're only saying that time has not been on it's side.
Compared to the shooters of today, it doesn't stand up very well...if at all.
Still, you have to remember, without Number 1, there wouldn't have been all the others.

The gameplay engine of "Number 1" holds up remarkably well, the issue is that people don't make games like that anymore. When you consider the evolution of the FPS since, Halo refined a control scheme to work with the duel analog sticks and dedicated buttons for grenades, melee, and jumping found on the original Xbox controller, Call of Duty (a game that doesn't need jumping) took that basic Halo layout and dedicated a stick to sprinting and a trigger to ADS. From a control standpoint, the controller changed more than the games did.
The enemy animations are dramatic and silly but sometimes I think that's Rareware influence coming through and feels more like a style than an primitive attempt at animation.
The graphics are typical N64 quality, which is to say, a mix of 2D assets and 3D landscapes making for environments that looked ugly by the time the PS2 came out. That console marks a huge transitional period in the industry and it shows the ugly spots that came with it all too well.
Point: The graphics, and controls aged like crap, but with a new lick of paint, and a migration to a modern controller, what you have is a game that is just as good as it was ever perceived to be. It's gameplay style makes it "different" and once you attach a release date to the title, it's EASY to blame it's age for not playing the same as Halo or COD thus getting the label "old" or "outdated" when in fact, the only difference is just that, difference.
I would love to remake that game with modern graphics, sound, map it to a modern controller, and introduce it to a new generation and resist the urge to tell them "this game was the COD of my day" I think it could hold it's own and see a resurgence in popularity.
