Updated: Day 2
Just some quick observations from my first few hours with the game:
Getting into a game takes a long time... if it happens at all. *Day two saw these wait times significantly reduced.
Only two maps (one co-op) on the beta, and the maps feel themed yet generic. Nothing is memorable about these maps.
The action is constant. As soon a match is over they automatically load up another so there is about 20 seconds of down time between a match and I like that.
Selecting "Quit" from the start menu immediately ejects you from the game without a confirmation prompt.
Triangular COD style reticle makes shooting from the hip impractical in most scenarios.
Just touching an enemy vehicle is instant death. We shouldn't be punished for running between an AT-ATs legs. Luke did it, and it's epic.
The default blaster rifle they give you feels way under-powered. Speaking of which...
Rebels and Imperials alike feel like bullet sponges.
Poor voice acting for Luke and Vader. They just don't sound right.
Lukes character model for the battle of Hoth is incorrect. He is wearing his RotJ costume in a ESB setting.
No fall damage, which may not be realistic, but works to insure jet packing stays practical.
I really like the graphics and sound. If I had a better display and sound system it would be truly impressive. Focus on light makes it very obvious it's built on the Frostbite 3 engine.
The music direction is very well paced. Menu music is appropriately quieter and slower paced.
Beta is only 720p making it harder to see players across the map.
Everything from turrets to air strikes to vehicles are only usable through floating icons scattered throughout the map, which feels like a place holder mechanic. There is literally no ground to air combat in this game. You spawn as a fighter.
(One hour in) The multiplayer gameplay on the whole, feels like COD big time. You spawn, run towards objective, kill everything you see, die, and do it again.
Even though there are no ADS, I find myself pulling that left trigger to zoom more that I think I should. There is way too much play space for 16v16 battles here.
Played solo survival (co-op) mode.
I can already tell that I'm really going to miss a full single-player option. We need DICE to clarify what the locked off modes are ASAP, so we can get an idea of how robust the "single-player" offering is.
EA already knows about some of the issues. There are lots of pre-written complaints to choose from in a post-game survey you take after a match.
The whole thing feels like a beta, as it should, but it also looks like an over glorified tech demo at the moment, and it seems like that's all the main games is shaping up to be. You can hit the level cap of the beta in just under 2 hours.
