One of my favourite games of 2015 has to be Gears of War Remastered on the Xbox One. In this video I talked about how Gears of War is balanced, tactical and if played correctly can cause what is know as ego death... Available as early access content on my Patreon page.

I really like the concept of ego death. I find that in alot of games and you make a great point on how important immersion is.

I wanted to elaborate a little more on it but the video was already too long, I think immersion is an interesting topic in gaming but it is so subjective.

Killstreaks are definitely unbalanced. What's the point in making it so that the winning team wins by even more? Stupid CoD. Gears is definitely a very interesting competitive game, but I'm not interested in heavily team-based shooters. Probably because I don't tend to have many friends who play any single game. It's definitely satisfying to watch gameplay of it, though. You can always tell if a shooter is fun if it's fun to watch. I find ego death to be a critically important aspect of game design. Stories in games should be kept extremely subtle as to not hinder immersion.

Killstreaks are really dumb, imagine if there were kill streaks in chess, take three pawns and drop a predator missile on the queen...
The thing with ego death/escapism is that it is completely subjective some people can be lost in the moment watching some crappy soap on TV. The interesting thing with both Gears and GoldenEye is both multiplayer's were an after thought and kind of thrown together (though gears was updated and added to after launch). I think a lot of the time the key to success is being impulsive some game mechanics have been over thought.

Creating something because you want to, not because the publisher needs you to check a box. Almost all the greatest games ever made came from a group of people making the game they wanted to make and outside influence stays away.
