I realised something recently whilst playing Elite Dangerous, cruising across the Milky Way to deliver a bounty I had taken care of. The most beautiful piano melody flared up on the dynamic music system and I realised just how much of an effect a soundtrack can have on a game. Seriously, gave me goosebumps. Whether it's orchestral or J-Pop or just your bog standard licensed music, a soundtrack can go a long way in the tone, feel, and your overall enjoyment of a game! What soundtracks do you hold in high regards? Maybe the dulcet lonely tones of Shadow of the Colossus? Or perhaps the bleepy bloopy retro goodness of the megaman collection? I think I may have gotten addicted to Elite Dangerous, send help.

One of the best songs I have ever heard in a game was in Sword and Sworcery. For some reason I really like the music in MGS2, when I replayed it recently I forgot just how good the background music was for it, its not like I would listen to in without playing the game though. Same thing with Turok 1, replaying it reminded me how good the music was for level 3. Another game that comes to mind was Omikron: The Nomad Soul partly because David Bowie wrote the soundtrack for the game and he was even in the game.

Recently I have had Metal Gear Solid V on repeat on my headphones. Just the licenced tracks including the promotion music that wasnt in the game like Nuclear by Mike Oldfield. That song on good headphones is epic. A more guilty pleasure off that game is Gloria - Laura Branigan. Thats a very fun song to play while your clearing out a base.
One of the better original soundtracks in recent memory is from State of Decay. I'm big on memorable music in games so I end up sounding like a broken record in talking about the same games. SoD is no acceptation. I'm still talking about that game and a big part of it is the music. Rarely does a game capture and complements it's tone so well while still feeling both fresh and memorable. For instance, Fallout 4 has a good soundtrack, but as far as being memorable goes, it escapes me personally.
Not licenced but probably one of the most spot-on recreations of what you would hear while seeing Rambo and his latest love intrest trekking through the jungle. Blood Dragon gives you the setting of Rambo, scenario of Escape from New York, and physicality of a Terminator. The music you hear throught that game is a constant reminder that you are playing an 80s action movie.
Resident Evil as a series has always been pretty solid on the music side, but REmake was extra special. Exploring this big mansion alone wouldn't have been half as engrossing if not for it's soundtrack, Every other room I walked into would present me with a new music piece that perfectly set the mood. It might be cliche, but the Save Theme for me is a HUGE part of the identity of the game. The slow somber tone both servs to say that this is a chance to get your bearings but also keeps you aware that your going to have to leave and the cold silent dread is just on the other side of the door. It's perfect in how it serves to keep you in the mood and remind you that this isnt time to relax but more time to plan. I'm going off track alittle here but I imagine the begining shot from Day of the Dead (1985) and how well that music would fit there. Your world has gone to hell. It's stressful, dangerous, fear of death is constant and you are exhausted. Nowhere is safe from reality.

I'm a sucker for retro music tbh... There's just something so impressive to me about music that was made to fit on such a limited piece of hardware, and some of the tracks games for the Mega Drive (Genesis) and era still impress me to no end... Nothing quite like firing up some Road Rash, Desert Strike or Contra Hard Corps songs to listen to

If you're looking for a fantastic OST from games, then you're gonna have to look way back to the original Command and Conquer...

I'm also a sucker for emotional stuff. I like this one in particular because it's very powerfull, long and diverse and it has the best loop ever, you won't even notice it the first time around.

I love the soundtracks from the first three silent hill games. it really adds to the sense of loneliness and isolation that the early silent hill games masterfully crafted.

Silent Hill 4 sounds like someone is trying the guitar for the first time!
