She would still have the same personality but I think there's a big difference between pants, skirts, and shorts. There is a big difference between pants skirts, and shorts but she could have worn anything else and bent over the window. Her look may contribute to her character but we just don;t know how or why. Right now, it looks like sex appeal marketing. That could change, but I have my doubts about a wordrobe scene with Harley justifying the fishnets and panties she currently wears. Yeah i know their short shorts but visually, there is very little difference.
It is getting weird that your talking about her like a real person. No offence. She was designed this way and I've never seen anything with Harley giving reason for her new outfits. Just commenting on her costume change. I imagine it's more to distract people with her "cute sexy" look so they underestimate her. I suppose thats the idea in the movie but while a jester outfit or corset and tight pants is VERY distracting, I'm not sure i like what the movie is saying by putting her in that costume, but i don't even want to touch that. There just doesn't seem to be alot of thought behind it other than showing off the actresses body.
I just doubt more thought has been put into her design than you think. I mean, how do you know unless you know the writers/directors. I know your excited for the film but mistakes and oversights are just that and shouldn't be ignored. Furthermore, that ignorance should not be justified with blind speculation. Harley is likely to get more screen time than any other character, but minus her costume, she is so similar to other iterations, it's very hard to believe they put alot of thought into making her character an iconic movie character. Mind you, I'm talking about thoght in her design, personality, story etc. Effort into telling her story is a differnt metter, she is a big part of the movie afterall.
"Think about it because the most marketable Harley would be one that's sexy but also wearing pants. This is more than marketing."
We have been back and forth about this for days. Short shorts harley gets people talking, and is very very marketable. We couldnt be talking at all if she was copy and paste from Arkham City.
The version and story they are taking influence from is the New 52 Suicide Squad Harley which is the corset wearing short shorts version. Are you a comic fan? I'm just wondering because New 52 Suicide Squad Harley is when she blew up as a massive character in DC comics, she's always been popular but that was when she became massive. I also think the Rocksteady Batman games helped push her popularity.
I actually got the impression that Quiets look did fit her personality. She was all but invincible and had been torn down and rebuilt into this super soldier. Her lack of clothing may be both and unintentional means of distraction, and a way of communicating her stance on her horrible lot in life. She would invite a bullet to the heart if something deep down inside her didn't scream for self preservation. That is why, in the end, she can finally go. She has nothing left and finally found something worth dying for and whatever was inside doesn't scream anymore.
I guess I'm just surprised. Would Harley bend over the window like that? Yes. Did she need to wear short shorts and did the camera need to be right there? No. Jarred Leto takes off his shirt but he's covered in distracting tatoos, has metal teeth, and actos like a angrier heath Leger. Thats fine, but it's hard to have a problem with shirtless crazy white men. I've seen Cops.
I guess the sexiness works in the context of it being a action/adventure popcorn movie to the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy, but thats a context that makes more sense on the other side of the 4th wall. Otherwise, this is going to ba alot of peoples first impressions of Harley, and I'm not happy with it if you couldn't tell. I like Harley and think she deserves better. But hey! We haven't seen the movie yet.

Let's just assume that Harley is intentionally being sexualized. What's the problem with that? Is it problematic when women try to make themselves sexy? Is it problematic when I find women sexy? Surely not. As far as I'm concerned, objecting to sexualization is simply pearl-clutching demonization of male sexuality or sexuality in general. It all depends on the context. Going with the assumption that this is intentional sexualisation for marketing purposes, I think it's fine because Suicide Squad is a movie that will mostly be watched by males. There's a bigger question of when is sexualisation okay and not okay but it can be hard to decide depending on the genre, intended audience and expected box office. It has it's ups and downs to put it simply. I don't think objecting to it is the demonisation of male sexuality because it's all about context and characters, a character like Harley Quinn wouldn't work in a film trying to be realistic but in Suicide Squad she works perfectly. Is it problematic when women make themselves sexy or men enjoy it? No, It should be free choice to do whatever you want as long as you aren't hurting anyone. I'm just saying that Harley's sexualisation is justified because it's more than making her sexy for us (male audience members) to enjoy. It's a big part of her character and it annoys me when people point out her sexualisation and say it's only there for 13 year old boys to get horny over. It worries me because we are slowly entering an age where only one type of female character is allowed and it's started to happen in video games... Harley Quinn is one of my favourite comic book characters and I would hate for her to be watered down and censored because of silly complaints. Nobody on these forums have "complained" but the sexualisation has been pointed out and it just kinda annoys me that it's the one thing everyone jumps on when it comes to female characters. Female characters tend to be scrutinised more and the end result is less variety and scared creators.

Pretty much the only time that sexualization isn't okay is arguably in a children's movie. However its very inclusion would make the film not a children's movie. It worries me because we are slowly entering an age where only one type of female character is allowed and it's started to happen in video games... Agreed, creators should be able to make any characters they want. SJWs destroy everything they infect.

Otherwise, this is going to ba alot of peoples first impressions of Harley, and I'm not happy with it if you couldn't tell. I like Harley and think she deserves better. But hey! We haven't seen the movie yet. But this is Harley, I don't understand the "deserves better" argument when it comes to Harley Quinn, they are being faithful to the character. Why aren't you happy with it? I really don't understand why anybody could have this view unless they don't like characters like Harley Quinn and if that's the case then why does she matter? Just ignore her and hope she isn't the main character... She is the main character or at least the lead actress so I guess ignore. I've watched many movies with characters I've hated. The movie isn't saying anything, none of the characters in Suicide Squad are supposed to be inspiring or role models. That doesn't mean Harley Quinn can't be a likeable character or even have relatable qualities. I don't understand how anyone could come to the conclusion that the movie is trying to say anything insidious about women. You have a character called Amanda Waller in the film, she creates the Suicide Squad, it's her plan and she's an incredibly powerful person whose gender doesn't matter, she isn't a villain (kinda) and she isn't dressed like Harley. Comics have actually rebooted Waller into a "sexy" version and it was the least favourite version and the Arrow version of Waller wasn't well received. I could say the same to you but I've been following the movie and Harley is one of my favourite comic book characters so I feel that I can comment on the decisions of the filmmakers and writers with some confidence. We've had a discussion on Quiet before so you know she's one of my favourite MGS characters, I'm saying this just in case someone thinks I hate Quiet. I don't understand how you can say this about Quiet but not say the same thing about Harley. There's nothing in MGSV that even explains why Quiet wears a battle bikini, her personality doesn't even allow us to theorise why she would wear a bikini and nobody is ever distracted by it in the story of the game, it serves no purpose other than for the audience to gawk at. Even if you don't like Harley's outfits you can at least understand why she would wear them just by looking at her and if you can't tell from her body language the way she acts just screams that she would go about in revealing outfits. The filmmakers want you to be surprised because the characters are surprised. Did the camera need to be there? Yes. Yes it did. It emphasises the gratuitous nature of the character, we were seeing what she wanted the characters around her to see. The shot would have less effect if it was done from the front or side. I said earlier this was the director having his cake and eating it too, this shot is entirely justified but it also has the double effect of getting extra attention through sex appeal. I've seen several women talk about how sexy Jared Leto is in Suicide Squad... I don't get it but he's shirtless and those women love it. We just don't notice it because we don't see Jared Leto, we see another version of a famous comic book character. Is it common for cops to be shirtless over there?

I guess I just imagined a movie with the word "suicide" in the title to be alittle more mature rather than deviant as this looks. I'm disappointed they arnt continuing the serious tone DC was going with coming out of Dark Knight Rises, and through Man of Steel. If they are, they certainly not marketing it that way. Those other DC films might have been a downer but at least it was different from the Marvel movies. The tone sounds appropriate enough but when I see the blatant use of sexual imagery to sell the movie it just ends up feeling like a cheap marketing ploy.
It makes me think this whole movie is an attempt at a Guardians of the Galaxy copy cat. We already know DC is fast-tracking alot of characters to get a Justice League movie out before the end of the decade while The Avengers are still popular. It's very hard for me to trust that they will do all these characters justice. Seeing Harley promoted as a tramp downplays the intelligence of her character this only helps solidify my suspicion that being such a copy cat film will make it feel forgettable, redundant, and cheaper by comparison. Oh and people will compare.
Cops is a reality tv show in USA from the 90s. They mostly arrested crazy shirtless white guys in that show.

We already know DC is fast-tracking alot of characters to get a Justice League movie out before the end of the decade while The Avengers are still popular. I love the serious tone of the Nolan movies and MoS, BvS will probably be just as serious with a few jokes thrown in. However Suicide Squad is not a serious movie and I think this movie was announced before GotG was released in cinemas and nobody expected GotG to be a big success, now David Ayer was brought on to direct and write several months after GotG and maybe it did colour some of Suicide Squads developments but at the same time the only real similarity between the two movies is it's about a group of unexpected heroes. Obviously the major difference is the Suicide Squad are villains and are forced to be the heroes. If the movie didn't have Squad in the title, or Joker, Harley, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, Enchantress... I would agree with you and would be shocked that it's not a "mature" movie but it's called Suicide Squad (A cool but daft name) and features many daft comic book characters. It's not going to be mature, it's going to be silly, dirty, crude, juvenile and gratuitous, everything Suicide Squad needs to be a true Suicide Squad movie. Just in case you haven't heard, it was recently announced Wonder Woman is June/July 2017 (can't remember which one) and Justice Leage Part One is November 2017 (Yeah part 1... Not sure how I feel about that.) Everything is a cheap marketing ploy, I'm not going to lie and say Harley Quinn's ass shot was in the trailer for other reasons, it was purely there for marketing but it's inclusion in the film is a part of her character and the film as a whole. People will always compare, even if the movies are nothing alike. "Seeing Harley promoted as a tramp downplays the intelligence of her character" Some would call that slut shaming... But! I understand your hesitance. Harley is a trashy character so she will come across trampy or slutty, it's her character, not everyone is going to like it, she's incredibly divisive and that's why I have a problem with people calling out Harley on her sexualisation. It's her character not some insidious sexist design or even unintentionally sexist designs. I'm pretty sure this won't be a copycat movie, I can't say for sure it won't be but I'm confident enough that it won't be. Cops... I remember a show like that in the UK. Pretty boring, I assume the American one is over the top and crazy?

The american version of Cops it pretty real. it came out in the 90s and a show where a bunch of white cops consistently arrest black guys wouldn't float so ti became a joke that the police on the show only arrest crazy shirtless white guys, because thats pretty much all they show. lol
I'm shaming the marketing that are using our first and possibly only incarnation of Harley for the next five years, as a sex object to sell the movie. So far, abandoning all prior knowledge of the character, the trailers have her as a intelligent victim turned ditsy homicidal tramp. That's pretty much all we have seen so far. You can throw some optimistic speculation at that but facts are facts as they stand.
The movie isnt out yet and we can worry all day and night about what will be, but it's ultimately out of our hands. I don't like the oversexualized portrayal of Harley because it feels like a decision born from marketing, and it wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't what will be the fast majority's first impression of her.

Is that the show with bad boys song? It is all speculation but at the same time, my knowledge of Harley, knowledge of her different versions and knowledge from the movie (been following the movie for a very long time) I think I can say in confidence that this Harley is going to be awesome and the trailer has everything I want from Harley in it (when combined with the first trailer.) Here's a question, is your problem the sexualisation of Harley being used as marketing or the fact Harley is sexualised in the movie? Because the latter has been true for 15+ years, in some cases more extreme than what's in this movie.

My problem is that so far they are damaging (my expectations of) a promising film by advertising it as yet another "turn your brain off" summer popcorn movie. Now, lots of great movies have sex in the marketing, but this is a personal opinion rooted in issues that could effect all of us.
I was expecting a serious spin off of the somber toned DC movies we've seen in the last decade or so, what I have seen so far is a Guardians of the Galaxy copy cat film, and it's being promoted that way. Yeah, what you are seeing is very different from anything Marvel, but the spirit feels the same.
I'm just tired of it man. Is that a fair enough reason? I'm just so tired of the same old tropes and so tired of people buying in to stuff that just isn't THAT good. If you say Star Wars was a better film in 2015 than comparable action or sci-fi like Kingsmen or Ex Machina respectively, then you prove my point. Films are an art form where character development and pacing are crucial. Hey, when this film comes out, I would like to go see it provided more trailers don't end up scaring me away. Right now, Suicide Squad looks like your typical super hero movie. It might be a good portrayal of certain comic books but we need a good movie here too.
Confession: I'm pretty DC loyal and haven't liked anything from them since Dark Knight Rises. I'm also sick to death of the ongoing bait and switch stuff were seeing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Every movie is just a portrayal of the events that came before the next film rather than just trying to be a great film in its own right. We didn't need a Thor 2 or Iron Man 3. It's absolutely ridiculous that character development and scenario building take a back seat to the foreshadowing of the next 3 films in the lineup. Sad really.
Harleys portrayal in these trailers only helps solidify my suspicion that all Suicide Squad is is an antihero story being made to capitalize on the surprise success of Guardians. Same way Wonder Womans stand alone movie looks like the first Captain America, and Batman V Superman is DCs answer to The Avengers.
I'm not saying all these films will fail, but it's very possible they are being made for the wrong reasons. While I could just lay back and enjoy the ride, someone is getting filthy rich off of these movies simply by meeting a standard that today is just that, standard.

Now, lots of great movies have sex in the marketing, but this is a personal opinion rooted in issues that could effect all of us. Just want to clarify something. "Now lots of great movies have sex in the marketing, but this is a personal opinion rooted in issues that could effect all of us." Are you saying that sexualised characters in movies can have a negative influence on us? The problem is, Suicide Squad wouldn't work if it was in the same style as the Nolan films. Suicide Squad will be a dark film, we know that the Joker tortures Harleen Quinzel and throws her into a vat of chemicals against her will (assuming it's against her will) and we know several members on the team won't last till the credits. It's not going to be a fun ride like Guardians, it's going to be chaotic. The marketing is similar but how else do you market a movie about unlikely heroes? Also this is the first trailer (supposed to be) and the movie isn't out till August so when we get a trailer that reveals the story we'll know for sure whether this is copying Guardians or not. I get it, I'm starting to get tired of the Marvel movies, every single one is the same and even Guardians follows the same formula. That's why I'm really excited for Suicide Squad and BvS. Star Wars was my 2015 film of the year and Kingsman was my second, Mission Impossible and Mad Max were joint third. Star Wars was pretty much a remake of A New Hope but for me it delivered on the action, story, characters and universe. Creed only just came out over here and if I would've seen it last year it would've been my number 1 movie, because it delivered on everything I want. I think it's a bit mean to say people are just "buying into stuff that just isn't THAT good." there's a reason so many movies have similarities, I haven't seen Ex Machina but I'm sure I could tell you several other movies it's taken inspiration from, same with Kingsman, I've seen several movies have the "It's not that type of movie" stuff going on. So when the Suicide Squad trailer comes out and it has Harley Quinn and she looks and acts like Harley Quinn, Joker, Killer Croc and so on... It's everything I want from a Suicide Squad movie. The tone, action, characters and universe... Every movie has similarities and I hope Suicide Squad doesn't end up as a generic super hero movie, it might still be good but that's not what the SS should be and with all the interviews and everything David Ayer has said I have a lot of faith that this is going to be one hell of a movie. [quoteConfession: I'm pretty DC loyal and haven't liked anything from them since Dark Knight Rises. Sad really.[/quote] I wouldn't say it's as bad as what you made it out to be but it is getting annoying. That's why a lot of people preferred Ant Man over Age of Ultron, it was a complete story and hinted at Ant Man 2. I'm worried that DC is going to enter too late with the whole everything is connected and everything is foreshadowing to Darkseid (assuming that's who they go with) but we won't know until BvS. Also Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 were hot garbage... How does Harley's portrayal tell you that it's an antihero story capitalising on Guardians? Harley Quinn looks or acts nothing like any of the characters in Guardians, the closest the movie gets to Guardians is that guy in the subway destroying the train. Harley Quinn is what's going to make or break Suicide Squad, she's a unique character and there's no way WB would let anyone mess her up, she has the potential to earn them billions. Yeah Wonder Woman has me worried, we don't need an origin story especially a Word War 1 origin story. The only thing that set's it apart from Captain America is that this is set in three different era's. You've got several hundred years ago all the way up to World War 1 and then modern day, no idea how it all connects so there's a chance it could end up different than The First Avenger but it's worrying that they're doing something so similar to Captain America. I don't think Batman V Superman is DC's answer to the Avengers, Justice League is next year. BvS will have the Justice League in it but if they've done BvS right, the majority of that movie will be about Batman and Superman and that's exciting. I think, the problem is... Every movie is made for profit and to me being a big Marvel and DC fan, Marvel is the one that's hitting that standard and staying at it, whereas DC is trying to go past it. If Batman V Superman is what it says it is, it's going to be massively different from every other Marvel movie (outside of the big super hero fights) and it's the same for Suicide Squad. If DC and WB's deliver on their promises we are going to get some of the best comic book movies of all time. Everybody says 2008 was the most exciting year for comic book fans, it's 2016 if DC deliver.

Never mind The Dark Knight, if DC can deliver on these movies in 2016. It will be the birth of the DC Cinematic Universe regardless, but I would love to see people as excited for DC this summer as they seem to be for Marvel. I may not like the marketing, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see how these movies do. There is a piece of me deep down that is screaming in excitment to see live action versions of these characters. I was DC lyal growing up because other than Spider-Man I just couldnt wrap my head around the often organic nature of how Marvel characters get/have/use their powers.
BTW. I hated the batman v superman trailer too. I think I saw a girl in a white see-through tank top in that one and it offended me so bad I.... ya know what, I don't know where I'm going with this. I'm really not offended by nudity, I just don't like it used to inadvertently cheapen the image of something I hold dear. In case you couldn't tell.
But really, I'm just not impressed with the trailers for these movies. There casting for Lex Luthor is what actually offended me, I don't like Ji Cortney but he might be used correctly here, and it's hard not to feel like Will Smith isnt staring in this movie as much as his name is starring on the posters. know whata mean?

I was DC lyal growing up because other than Spider-Man I just couldnt wrap my head around the often organic nature of how Marvel characters get/have/use their powers. Growing up I was a Marvel Kid but my first comic books were DC so DC ended up being what stuck with me. I really don't have a deep Marvel Comics history, most of what I know is from research, movies and cartoons. Unless it's Daredevil I loved the Daredevil comics, not a fan of Mark Waid but damn the Bendis and Brubaker stuff... I love it. DC is still where it's at for me, I wasn't a fan of the Dark Knight Rises but Man of Steel brought back my excitement for the DC movies and the BvS stuff and Suicide Squad, I just couldn't be happier. I don't remember a girl in a white see-through tank top in any of the BvS trailers... The closest I can think of is Wonder Woman wearing a white top that showed off a tiny bit of cleavage, then maybe the Japanese woman wearing the black dress but that only showed her arms. I understand how you think it cheapens it but I don't think sexualisation cheapens anything as long as it isn't misplaced. Wonder Woman in her armour is fine, Harley Quinn in her short shorts is fine but in Arrow I really don't like Canary's outfit, it doesn't look right there's too much boobage with no thought, it's just zero thought cleavage. Dude... Will Smith... Yeah I feel ya on that. The trailers have me less worried because the focus has been on Harley, Joker and the Squad as a whole (almost) so I'm not too worried that Will Smith is taking all the glory, because if he starts making trouble in the neighbourhood and getting into fights I'll have to send his ass to Bel-Air. The Lex Luthor casting didn't have me worried till I saw him in the most recent trailer... That's not what I expected. I hope when Lex is behind closed doors he calms down because I don't want the hyper Lex. Everybody has fallen in love with Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and I think he looks great, but I've never had a problem with him. I think I understand your hesitations and with the marketing but I don't share them because this is everything I wanted. It's perfect. Hopefully the movie will prove your worries wrong but Harley will still be running around in skimpy outfits, so will the Enchantress, I really hope she doesn't get shortchanged in this.

I liked Dark Knight Rises, but thought Man of Steel was a drag, but at least it was owning that darker image. Marvel is just built different enough, that it can never really meet that dark tone, and it feels signature to DC.
The thing with Will Smith is a marketing thing too. It's not as bad as I might make it out to be but I feels like nobody talks about it. His name and face need to be in all the promotion because it's likely they had to pay him the most. It's looking like We'll spend a majority of the time with Harley...
The guy thats playing Lex Luthor. I don't doubt that he has a screen presence but can he act? I mean, I'm pretty sure he playes the same fast-talking smartass in every movie I see him in. There is a role out there for him. Something that could be iconic and fit him perfectly but it's not this. He's weird though, so something will come his way we will all remember him for. He would be a great riddler.
I won't fall in love with Courtney until he learns to act. lol
I'm sorry but the Enchantress will most likely be short changed. I'm gettign the feeling she'll have one or two scenes shes central in and thats it. They might make her do something really bad early on to make us not really like her or unable to relate and identify with her so she can be a plot device during the climax. If this was Marvel, they would ignore her in this film so she could have a spin-off but I hope that never happens. Not this way at least, maybe in a decade with a writer director who wants to do it for more than money.

I liked Dark Knight Rises, but thought Man of Steel was a drag, but at least it was owning that darker image. Marvel is just built different enough, that it can never really meet that dark tone, and it feels signature to DC. I could make a giant post telling you why I didn't like Dark Knight Rises but I would have to watch it again so I'm not remembering bits wrong, but I really didn't like it. The majority don't like Man of Steel which is a shame because I think there's a lot in it that is being ignored because some have a problem with the destruction, why didn't you like it? The dark tone is signature to DC, so Suicide Squad will be dark, it just won't be serious. When Will Smith was cast a lot of people shared your worries but after the trailers people aren't as concerned anymore. They definitely did pay Will Smith the most, he has top billing and the behind the scenes photos show that he might be a part of a love triangle with Harley and Joker, so he's going to be a big part hopefully he doesn't take control of the movie. Jesse Eisenberg was great in The Social Network and people thought he got Lex Luthor because of that but with him acting so hyper and crazy, the fans are really confused with the casting choice. Eisenberg usually plays subdued weird, he hasn't really had a loud performance. He's pretty good in Spartacus, the first few episodes are so so but it gets really good. By shortchanged I mean not a real character and not faithful to the comics. I think she might have something to do with the villain in this movie, she's been a pretty big villain in DC history and she messes with magic and it looks like the bad guy in Suicide Squad is magic based. We know the Tattooed Man is in the film and I know nothing of him other than some stuff I looked up and this might be spoilers so be careful. Enchantress in the comics wants to revive her brother and that ends up causing loads of trouble, well the Tattooed Man can resurrect people, I believe in the comics Enchantress and Tattooed Man didn't team up but the movies like to do their own thing. So I believe Enchantress will have a big part but, Cara Delevigne is playing her and she's a model not an actress and she isn't wearing anything the same as the comic books. While I'm ok with costume changes, I'm not cool with character changes that make them no longer the character and I'm worried that even if the Enchantress is straight from the page, Cara just can't do it justice. I'm going to give Cara the benefit of the doubt because she was in one thing called Paper Towns and while I haven't seen it, a lot of people said she was great in it, that gives me some confidence but she's still a model before an actress and Paper Towns could've been a fluke.
