So I got into a discussion with someone on Twitter about bad and good localisations of Japanese games. If you haven't been following gaming news some Japanese games have been censored for pretty stupid reasons.
So the question is what is a good localisation? I think localisation should be bringing over the game and changing as little as possible, he thinks localisation should be changing the game sometimes radically in order to make it appeal to the wider audience.
The problem with his opinion is that many Japanese games will have to be radically changed and will no longer be the same game. So why not just remake the game western style if you care that much about bringing over a different version?
What do you lot think? Should localisation change the game in drastic ways or should it keep the original game as intact as possible? When I play a Japanese game I want to play a Japanese game not some weird western chopped up version.

Well, I don't think the games should be changed at all short of English translation and improvements where possible.

I don't think localisation should do anything to the game other than bring it over. Even improvements. I just want the original title in english, it annoys me to see games get changed in drastic ways because of this fake outrage that appears over "sexy" content in games.

I'd even go so far as to say unless it's done exceptionally well, English dubs aren't even worth it either. Given the option I play most of the games that offer it in Japanese with English subs.

I only mean In the context of, if said title has been out in Japan for 2 years. If improvements have been made to the game since, or the developers want to use localization as an opportunity to polish the game further, than I'm all for it. Taking content out or changing it for censorship reasons is bogus though.
If the game does improve for the better than the original audience is just paying that early adopters fee, yeah that might by unfair, but what it fair these days? If the game is good enough to get localized it's probably good enough in its original version.

What annoys me is that foreign movies don't get changed, all we get is a bad dub or subtitles. When video games come over everyone starts meddling with them... "This is insensitive" "This is sexist" "They won't understand this" "Change their names" "Make them talk about america" "Remove this" "Add that" Just bloody translate the game!

Seriously though, that is why games need to be respected as art and left the hell alone. Games are ment to be played.
