The Rules
Here’s the challenge, how many good quality games can you buy if $15/£15 is all you have to spend?
The rules are simple, online doesn’t count, you have to buy the games from a shop. Pre owned games are perfectly fine, in fact if you want a decent list 2nd hand games are the way to go!
If you would like to take part in the GoldenEdge Gamers Budget Gaming Quest we would love to hear from you and post your results.
It’s a good time to be a gamer when you can walk into a gaming shop with £15 in your pocket and come out with 8 high quality games, some of which I would consider to be the finest games ever made.
I feel like I was born in the wrong time period, I was much younger when most of these games were first release and I paid top dollar (or pound in my case) for them.
Part of me wonders if I was a kid now with my pocket money to spend on all these “old” games would I have as much respect and appreciation for them. The fact that there are still shops that sell these classic games from my childhood makes me happy that a whole new generation of gamers can play them.
I buy most of my pre owned games from CEX I have found games from other shops cost at least £1 more and sometimes a lot more. So all of the games on my list are from two different CEX shops.
My Budget Games List
Half life 2: £2.50
TimeSplitters: £1
Bioshock 2: £2
Max Payne 3: £1.50
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles: £3.50
Conflict Desert Storm 2: £0.25
Watchmen: The End Is Nigh: £4.00
Hitman: Contracts: £0.25
Total £15
Half life 2: £2.50
I will start my list with a classic which would deserves its place on a top 5 FPS list, I would go so far as to say it is one of my top 10 games of all time! I already own this game on the Xbox 360 in the Orange Box collection (which is better because it is in HD) and I also have access to it on my PC via Steam, so why am I buying this? I first completed this game on my Original Xbox, at the time my PC wouldn’t run it, I was very happy when the game got a console port even if it wasn’t in HD but I gave my copy to a friend to play (about 9 years ago) and I haven’t seen my copy or my friend since so £2.50 is a small price to pay to add this back into my collection.
TimeSplitters 2: £1.00
Another classic FPS game, just like Half Life 2 it is up there in my top 10 lists. This series is crying out for a remake or even just a HD port onto the Xbox One, if I could play this with all the friends I met play Perfect Dark XBLA I could finally die a happy gamer….. and then respawn in time for TimeSplitters 4!
Bioshock 2: £2.00
I feel embarrassed to say this but I HAVE NEVER PLAYED BIOSHOCK 2! Please don’t judge me, I loved the first Bio Shock, I played it to death, completed it on the hardest setting and got all the achievements. For some reason Bioshock 2 was just one of those games that slipped through my net usually this happens because I am playing something different at the time. This is the great thing about searching for gaming bargains, you can pick up some games you missed out on for a fraction of the price.
Max Payne 3: £1.50
Has it really been 4 years since Max Payne 3 came out!? It feels like only last year I was saying “Ppsssh that doesn’t look as good as the old Max Payne games and its too bright/colourful” and with that I completely wrote the game off But MGNoxa has since recommend I at least give it a try! The price drop for Xbox 360 games is crazy right now, I can only guess that trade in’s are through the roof (there was about 8 copies of Max Payne 3 on the shelf so I picked the cleanest looking box!) because everyone is going next gen which means it’s a good time to get them cheap. I remember when the 360 was only a few years old thinking the price for the games would never go below £10 how wrong was I. For £1.50 I snapped Max Payne 3 up.
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles: £3.50
If you know me at all you know I like my Resident Evil games to be Survival Horror games so you might wonder why I would pick this up. I am making lightgun videos soon so it will be good for me to see how this compares to classics like House of the Dead and Time Crisis 2. This is pretty much the price I could have got it on eBay but I saved on postage, plus this was in good condition with all the inlays.
Conflict Desert Storm 2: £0.25
Highly underrated and I feel forgotten about game, conflict desert 2 is one of my all time favourite co-op’s. I first played this with a friend on my Xbox it was also on the PS2 and PC but something people might not remember about the Xbox is unlike the PS2 it had it’s own hard drive which allowed you to burn music onto it. Some Xbox games would let you play YOUR OWN MUSIC while playing a game! This might not seem like a big deal now but back then it was a big deal for me and a friend. For this reason if a game was on both Xbox and PS2 I would always but the Xbox version.
Watchmen: The End Is Nigh: £4.00
Games rarely live up to their movie counter parts but I love The Watchmen, I love it so much that I am willing to buy a game that probably isn’t very good to see more of it. I don’t expect this game to be one few good games based on movies namely GoldenEye 007, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Blade Runner (PC) feel free to comment below if you can think of more, It’s a topic that interests me.
Hitman: Contracts: £0.25
Just like Half Life I already I have versions of this, I have it on the Xbox and I have Hitman Blood Money on the 360 which is almost like a remake of Hitman Contracts so I don’t “need” this game. Most people probably wouldn’t buy two versions of a game but when it comes to making videos for my YouTube channel I find it useful have more than one version, sometimes just for recording purposes. I plan on making videos about Hitman someday and 25p is a very small price to pay, you can barely get a pack of crisps for 25p yet you can get an absolute classic stealth game!
There you have it, those are the best games I could find for £15! If you feel like taking the GoldenEdge Gamers Budget Gaming Quest please get touch by replying to this thread.
