This is a really welcome surprise! When I heard about some Duke news coming soon I thought if they try to do something like Duke Nukem forever it will be nothing like the classic Duke. There is something about those 2D/3D graphics that will be lost if this is remade as a full 3D game. Plus the new levels is awesome I wish Perfect Dark had some new levels!

Alright guys. I won the bet. First reply mentioned perfect dark. Lol
Seriously though, Duke 3D was, and sure feels like the big shooter right before Goldeneye. If you want to appreciate what Goldeneye did for the genre, look at games like Duke 3D.
I say that because GE007 was my first impression of FPS, so the graphics and sound in Duke Nukem 3D aged like a dinosaur turd. I speak particularly about Duke Talk and the fact that most lines were hilarious but too hard to hear and lost their effect because of it. The 2.5D graphics are incredibly jarring and take some getting used to as well.
Graphics switch in first .30 helps show the difference.
I mention all this because the remaster is probably the best you could ask for one of the most influential fps of the 90s. The graphics will remind you of its age, but not having Dukes voice muffled, and the 2.5D environments not bending to your line of sight when you look up is a very welcome update. It helps this game keep its identity, while still being slightly modernized and tweaked to give the best presentation you can get for a 20 year-old game in 2016, without a Doom style reboot. The is Duke Nukem 3D.

Someone made a comment on that gameplay video which made me laugh "Switch from 1996 graphics to 1997 graphics!"

Someone made a comment on that gameplay video which made me laugh "Switch from 1996 graphics to 1997 graphics!" I honestly have no problem with that comment, because Goldeneye was a huge leap in 97. You could look up without getting vertigo in Goldeneye and now I can in Duke Nukem too. Maybe that isn't a big deal to some but it's a huge sign of age and obsolescence that's been fixed in the original engine and that's huge. Keeping the old music but re-recording Duke was smart too.

I get the feeling I'll be getting that feeling of "It's good and all, but something just isn't right" and I bet you it'll be Dukes lines... I've heard him run his mouth enough that how he sounds in that game is deeply embedded in me now... I'm sure John St John will have done a fantastic job at recreating his lines, but I just wonder if it's gonna be perfect...

I know what you mean Xargen. Any change is going to reflect back differently in your memory and it's going to be glaring. I can only speak for myself in saying that this version of DK3D is the most tantalizing I've ever seen.
So is anyone getting this?
Pretty sure it's $20 which seems like a fair price when you consider what your getting and the work they put into the otherwise untouched 1996 title. I could understand people that bought it multiple times on PC, Steam, Xbox, etc. shying away until a price drop, but I'm thinking I might pick this up at launch.
I only ever played Duke Nukem 3D on the N64 as a 3-day rental over a weekend.... in the year 2000. So I'm eager to relive this game without its technical abilities (due to its age) being such a jarring issue.

So is anyone getting this? I can't wait, I love the fact there is added content, I played this on the 360 (co-op with Xargen I might add!) so it hasn't been that long since I played it. It would be really cool to see a physical release but it probably won't happen. Bit of an odd question but does anyone know the name for the effect in Duke when a 2D object follows you around as you move? I have seen it in games where grass and stuff does it but I don't know the name for it.

So is anyone getting this? . I don't want to give Randy Pitchford money so I don't know if I will be getting it. I'm excited for it. Very excited. I need to see what these new Duke lines are first, I don't trust Gearbox not to of had some stupid influence.

Well I'm pretty sure there not out to basterdize the original audio with all new lines. I'm sure what was there is just being re-recorded. I don't know how they could screw it up with the original designers working on it. I'm half buying this at launch just to vote with my dollars for this sort of thing. It was expected that Duke Nukem 3D would port to current gen eventually, but this is a treat for people who care about the game and I'm interested in listening to the commentary.

They said there will be new Duke lines. I'm just worried that in this modern world we will see Duke (a pretty horrible character but he's supposed to be a sexist jerk, it's what makes him entertaining) turned into someone like the PC Principal from South Park, he's sexist but he calls out the aliens for being sexist and it's supposed to be funny. That stuff really has no place in Duke Nukem, I'm just hoping Gearbox know this. If they do, they'll get my money, even with Randy Pitchford still being a massive dick.

If we can't trust the original developers than who can we? The new duke lines are what they re-recorded word for word and new stuff is in the new levels. Considering how much of this game is untouched from a presentation side, I don't think anyone is going to make DK3d any less offensive. lol Huge sales goals for this game aside.
If this was a new game (reboot) I could see how they would be asked to dial it back. I'm not sure from who. Asking Nukem not to go into strip clubs and be a misogynistic action hero stereotype would be to take away his identity. Like asking Rockstar to do the same thing in a port of Vice City. At this point it's part of his identity. Finally, I don't think Gearbox (or anyone) would be so stupid to tamper with the main selling point of this game which is Duke Nukem 3D and it's reputation. The real fans will buy it no matter what, matter what but nothing would scare them away as quick as tampering with things they shouldn't and I see no tampering here.
I would be interested in seeing who would buy a Duke Nukem game if all it shared with DK3D was it's name and genre.... DKForever sank like a stone. My point is that Duke Nukem is at his best as a 90s gaming icon, and with the world being what it is today, that's likely all he ever will (should) be.
