My parents bought me a Game Boy Color for Christmas the year it came out. The following spring I got Pokemon with the understanding that my grades at school had to be straight A's or I would only get to play it on the weekends.
So for something like 3 months I spent 2 hours after school every day doing my homework so I could get straigh A's and the game would be mine and not till my final report card did I have 5 A's and 1 B and my mom took mercy on me and let me have the game.
I can honestly say I didn't learn a damn thing... okay one thing. Don't ever make a deal like that again. Next time I wanted a game I mowed the lawn for 2 months (8 times) and had the same results.

My dad hated me for not being more involved in sports. My mom was always pushing me to focus on the real world and invest more thought into my future, career, education etc. All good things on her part. I had absolutly no support for my intrest in movies, music, and games. Video games are toys in the same vein as dolls to them.
I'm still in the nerd closet and probably will be for life because of the stigma (at least where I live) on the man-child that plays video games regularly past the age of 16 years old.
I was brought to tears, after when I went to Denver Comic-con last year because I was amongst so many people who lived and breathed the same things I did. It was one of the most liberating experiences of my life to know that these people don't just exist on the internet forums. It's more than just a hobby for them and where I am right now, it can never openly be more than that. A hobby.

It used to be that way all over I feel, although now with the influx of casual gamers, it's becoming more and more socially accepted to even own a console, where years ago if you told someone you owned a console they woulda raised an eyebrow instead of asking you which one... Not sure how true that all is, but it's pretty much how I feel it is

For me, nobody I work with owns a console, my wife sometimes says I'm crazy addicted, my parents see it as a waste of time/money, and my best and only friend doesnt have the time, money, or even the interest anymore. I even swapped gamertags with my sisters boyfriend who is a couple years older than me and he is literally never online.

It's very accepted where I live pretty much everyone games now unlike when I was at school... I could count on one hand the friends I had that had consoles.
