TWD: Survival Instinct got a lot of bad reviews from all the big gaming magazines due to it's graphics and the fetch quests involved, but to be honest, it wasn't really given a fair trial. The game wasn't by any means a perfect game, but nor was it a pile of shite. It had it's ups and downs. I'll start by going over the things I enjoyed about the game via listing my points.
The game was survival oriented. What I mean by that is that the purpose of your actions and missions in the game was for your survival. You scavenge for a lot of the game, you spend time searching the area for food to heal yourself and survivors you have in your group, fuel for your vehicle to reduce the amount of stops you encounter on the road and ammo of course, although ammo is very scarce.
For a TV license it is actually quite good. I mean, come on, most TV licenses are plain terrible, no matter how many times developers think it is a good idea but the game does make a sort of good prologue for Daryl Dixon.
Getting to your next mission can be as tough as the mission itself. What I mean by this is you have to make decisions like, which survivors to take with you, which vehicle you use as every vehicle has it's own unique qualities, such as capacity and fuel consumption. You also have to decide which roads to take, whether it is the highway, which is quicker but you get less supplies, the back roads, slower and takes more fuel but you can scavenge more supplies along the way. The streets are basically in between the two. You also have to worry about and other situations along the way.
This game actually follows the rules of zombies. If you're bitten once, you're just dead, no "Don't worry you're immune you just lose a little health" bullshit, if you're bit, you're lying on the floor dead. Remove the head or destroy the brain, Remove the head or destroy the brain! That's right, no matter how many chest or foot shots, no matter how many arms or legs are gone they will still remain until you bash their head in.
Ok, so I've made four points about why I enjoy the game, so I'll even it out by mentioning four points about the game which I didn't really enjoy.
The characters just seemed to be emotionless through the entire apocalypse, with the exception of Daryl and Merle (Probably due to the actors being familiar with the concept of a zombie apocalypse.) The rest of the characters you meet throughout the game whether they're main characters or group members you recruit, just seem to have no emotion, it's like they're being bloody sarcastic. "Oh, could you help me please? I need some batteries for my radio..." Uhm, not good voice acting mate, work on your tone a little, you're stuck in a town full of zombies who have murdered everybody you love and you don't give a shit? I dunno maybe this is nitpicking. My point is the voice acting isn't great.
The storyline isn't really that good either, it started brilliantly but then just stopped being good, again it lost all emotion.
There are no hostile humans AT ALL! A big part of the walking dead, both the comics and the TV show was about the hostility, relationships and the sanity of people trying desperately to survive in a world that has been torn by zombies. Everybody seems to be friendly with you, no matter what you do. I just think that there would be hostility between humans in any apocalyptic scenario.
You're always alone. Nobody ever fights along side you, not even Merle, There was co-op mentioned, what happened to that? Again, a big part of survival is teamwork but I see no teamwork involved in this, plus it seems to be an alternate world where only useful living being just-so happens to be the only one to get hurt.
So I've said some good things said some bad things, overall I would rate it a 7/10 because of how it follows zombie rules and is actually a good test of your own survival skills as you're placed into some realistic situations.
This is the first review I've ever made so don't be too harsh.
Tell me what your opinions are on the game.
