I think I have a solution for Nintendo's home console troubles. They need a ReBoot console. If you think about it, just about anything in the entertainment industry that lasts longer than 30years has reinvented itself with a self proclaimed fresh start and that is exactly what Nintendo needs to do now. Here is my idea...
I propose Nintendo leaves the Wii U stagnant and just release ports, and sequels onto the console for the next 2 years. At E3 2014, tease a new console with typical silhouette posters and cryptic phrasing when asked by journalists. At E3 2015 reveal the Nintendo. Just Nintendo. With the tag line "30 years in the making."
Imagine, if you will...
Appearance: The design of the Nintendo will be based off of the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It's size and shape will be virtually identical (not as boxy though) to the 30 year old console. It will come in Grey, Black, Indigo, and White. Four Gamecube controller ports on the front, clustered (but spaced responsibly) where the NES controller ports originally were. Two Gamecube memory card slots will be present just above the controller ports protected by dust doors similar to the ones found on the Gamecube. A touch sensitive Power and Eject button will be in place of the original Power and Reset, with Eject replacing the Reset button. HDMI as well as composite/component compatibility along with 2 USB Slots a Sensor bar and sync button will be present on the back of the console. The controller will be of classic design, no touch screens or motion controls, and will incorporate elements from multiple generations.
Much like the Wii U Classic Controller.
Features: The specs will be on par with the specs of the then current generation of consoles and should fall between PS4 and Xbone as far as graphics and power are concerned. It will have a 250GB Hard Drive. Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Drive, it will be compatible with Gamecube, Wii and Wii U controllers. Wii U style interface with a streamlined App menu featuring Disc, Virtual Console, Browser, Store, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Amazon Video, etc.
Games: This console will be fully backwards compatible with Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U game discs. It will feature the entire (then current) Virtual Console library of games from NES to select Gamecube titles and will play new games in the future. In the vain of paying homage to the history of NES, it ships with New Super Mario All Stars. The classic compilation, remade with the New Super Mario Bros. engine. The game disc will slide into a slit on the front of the system much like the Wii U.
This is the future, really!
Price: $350. It's a fair and competitive price for a next gen console with a throwback design. It's will be expected to compete with Micro$oft and Sony for the hardcore gamer while keeping the casual gamer and the long time fan interested.
I think this proposal is very practical. It alienates no one and doesn't ask too much on Nintendo part. It caters to to the long time fan, the nostalgic ex-gamer and the current casual audience. It's a fresh start to a new direction that could put Nintendo back on the map of an industry it pioneered.
