It was a good video, definitely worth a watch if you are a Zelda fan, I am just not sure I agree with what has been said. Maybe I just dont want to believe it! maybe I am still in the denial stage. I dont even remember it been as dark as the video and MMCC's review makes it out to be but maybe I just forgot over the years. One thing I will say is I have never wanted to go back and play it as much as I do now!

Back to Clock Town with you JMM, and yes, it's a VERY dark game, but not in your face dark, it's more of a subtle dark... Yaknow, it all looks fine on the surface but you can just feel its all twisted underneath

I've always called it "disturbing", or "haunting" those words. When things are at their best, you get the gilded sword, your a hylia again and the the world is looking better becasue of you, all you need to do is look up and be reminded of all the impending doom that is upon you.
Ya see, up until Majoras Mask, death wasn't really a factor in Zelda games. Yeah sure you CAN die but you won't. You keep pressing on and finish the quest, save the princess, and live to tell the tale. That is exactly why Majoras mask is absolutely unique in story telling.
Looking around the world and seeing all these characters, all the FACES you have grown so fond of and used to though your adventures in Hyrule and Termina (same character models) makes looking up at that moon all the more chilling. It's like the world, everything that your escape with the Hero of Time is made up of is going to be consumed and destroyed by this evil.
You could turn away. Put the controller down. Ignore it. But... For anyone who completed Ocarina of Time and loved it, it is your mission to see this through to the bitter end. This is no longer just a video game. This is a spiritual journey. This is the greatest test you as a gamer will ever take. If you succeed you will never be the same and the impression it leaves on you will be long lasting.
I'm 25 years old and am fully aware that some day I will feel death upon me. It terrifies me, but it is inevitable, we are all going to die. Do not delay the inevitable. Play Majoras mask and face the journeys end. You owe it to yourself if only to look back and say you felt something real and more human than anything before.
I only say this because looking back at my feeling towards Majoras Mask it's so hard to think of any other video game that has left such a lasting impression.

Part of me wants to wait for the remake if there will be one.

Yeah me too. I have it on my Wii but between playing through half of OOT with the crappy classic controller I have for it and my HDTV making it's graphics range from dated to just plain ugly I think I'm going to pick it up for my 3DS where some real love was put into making it easier on the eyes and a bit more controllable on the ergonomically friendly 3DS. I plan to write a review on Ocarina of Time 3DS soon and I'm counting on a Majoras Mask 3DS announcement some time in the first half of 2014. Really. Just look at the message boards for A Link Between Worlds. EVERYBODY wants Majoras Mask 3DS over anything else.

Yeah I thought they were just going to retexture the world and remodel a few things but they actually added allot of visual accents that make the N64 hyrule a bit more believable as a real place.

They also made the water temple easier to navigate with coloured strips and stuff... Made me a little sad, I liked the challenge =p

I don't know if coloured strips would be enough! I am still stuck there on the master quest and I refuse to use a guide!

At least switching between the iron boots is easier. Just tap on them in the bottom screen. That pause screen chime haunts my nightmares because of the water temple. With the awkward shoulder button positioning of the Wii Classic Controller, it can get frustrating. Considering OOT is still the highest rated game on the 3DS (that's kinda sad) I expect it to be a bit more playable on the the handheld. I'm getting it next week.

Do yourself a favour when you get it... Once you have the Iron Boots, go to the middle of Lake Hylia and pop 'em on with your 3D effect turned up full

Interesting video. Although I agree with some of his points, the idea that Link some how died at the beginning of the game seems nonsensical. As I stated in my review, I saw MM as a personal journey for Link to overcome his dismal situation after OOT and discover his purpose in life. How could he discover this if he's dead? More importantly, what happens if/when Link discovers he's been dead this whole time and that none of the events in MM had actually taken place? Doesn't that leave him in a emotional position comparable to his state of mind after the events of OOT? If this "theory" (more like a hypothesis) is correct, it seems to undermine everything he did/learned over the course of the game. As for the MM NPC's being identical to the OOT ones, there are two things that easily explain this. First, Majora's Mask was developed in about a year, so they didn't have to time to create entirely new character models. Second, Link falls into a worm hole and is transported to an alternate universe. Think of it this way: MM is essentially the Zelda version of Alice in Wonderland. Sure it's a stretch, but it's more believable than Link somehow dreaming this all up while he's already dead. If you think that he's in some sort of limbo, what reason do we have to believe this is the case? Typically, important characters with unfinished business who die in OOT/MM (think Darmani, Mikau, the composer bros. or even Dampe from OOT) tend to stick around in the world and interact with the living. I see no reason to assume that a limbo (or afterlife for that matter) exists in the OOT/MM universe given the presence of the dead in Hyrule and Termina. Also, I think it's silly that he references the stupid Zelda timeline. Although MM is a sequel to OOT, there's no reason to apply that kind of continuity to the rest of the series. I see the N64 Zelda games as occupying a completely different universe from the NES/ titles or the more recent GC/Wii/DS ones. The timeline was just a bad attempt by Nintendo to shoehorn an extended universe into a franchise that can't have one IMO. In the end, he's right about one thing: "the gamer sees what the gamer most wants to see." Although I disagree with his death hypothesis, there's no right or wrong way to interpret Majora's Mask. Like any great game, it affects us all in different ways emotionally.

Yeah it is just a theory. I very much doubt even Nintendo was trying to portray the idea of Link actually being dead. Though I must admit that theory is pretty solid. I think the game has to do with the death but more about how people deal with it and the fact that the will to survive CAN save you if you try. Even if you die, you die without regret. Sorry but I just can't let myself believe that Young MM Link died with regrets and came back as the teacher in Twilight Princess.
I always thought the character models were the same because (in universe) Termina is the flip side of the world. The mirror image of sorts. The other side of the same coin. I know there are some technical reasons but I think the fact that Link has traveled to this new land and now has to save familiar faces from real doom that will literally destroy everything makes the entire game alot more dramatic and emotional in every good way that counts. I compare this to Ocarina of Time where (the bad guy won) after 7 years of Gannon laying waste to the Hyrule you can still find most NPCs alive and well.
Edit: Just wanted to say that we could talk about Majoras Mask forever. And if we do then so be it. Majoras mask is an example, at least for me, of what you point at when weather or not video games are form of high art is put into question. Personally, It was my first experience of a game this atmospheric and deep.
While I could point to SMB3, Goldeneye, or a few others, the Hero of Times story (OOT/MM) is the reason I stayed a gamer when things were pulling me away from this hobby. Not playing the game, but remembering the feeling I had playing them. I've been chasing that level of emersion like a heroine addict for years now. It's powerful and it amazing that such a wealth of conversation has started over this red-headed step child of the series.
