Pokemon X and Y, as well as sounding like an algebraic expression, has really peaked my interest over the past few days. It seems like the franchise has finally found it’s time to evolve, and is ready to face any criticism with open arms. Now, having only seen a few trailers and a small amount of gameplay, I honestly can’t say much about whether this will be a success or not. What I will say is that I’m definitely going to buy one of the two, and explain why you should give it a chance as well!
One of my favorite (and probably most noticeable) change to the series is the all new art style. While keeping all of the colors true to its roots, Pokemon has finally stepped outside of the second dimension and stumbled across untold worlds. Yes, the new 3D aspect is essentially the cherry on this hype-induced pie, Giving the franchise a completely fresh feel to it. It was also the main thing that made me want to go back to pokemon (having never really ‘properly’ played it before). The new look of the pokemon battles will really make this new installment shine, and hopefully add a new layer to the experience.
The first big change to the actual ‘game’ was definitely the multitude of ‘new pokemon’, and while adding a few new random number generators isn’t exactly a new thing, game freak definitely kept things interesting with the addition of an all new ‘fairy’ pokemon. While this may not seem like a very big thing to people looking in from the window, to anyone who’s ever played pokemon for more than a nanosecond will probably understand how big of an impact this could have. It’s a large risk the developers are taking, but if they can do it right, and add what could possibly be a ‘game changing’ aspect to a franchise cherished by so many without a hitch, I’m sure the payoff will be even greater than they imagined. Hell, I’ve only ever played pokemon for more than a few hours, and I’m excited that they’ve had the balls to do something like this.
Now, let’s move our attention to the one of the many other elephants in the room. I am of course, talking about the unbearably adorable ‘Pokemon-Amie’. When watching this, It may very well be true that many people wretched at the sight of this strange spin off. Also, the opposite could be said for the rest of the pokemon fanbase, the ones who leaped out of their chairs in joy at the sight of the little Pikachu purring as the strange man clawed at it’s head with the stylus. I have mixed feelings; Most of them, fortunately, are good. I don’t know about anyone else, but playing the older pokemon games, I had always wanted to be able to treat my pokemon like real pet. One of the generations added the ability to have your Pokemon follow you, and have certain moods at different times. For me, this was a nice touch. Not as interactive as I’d have liked, but it felt that the happiness my little Pikachu experienced whilst adventuring at my side somewhat compensated for the deathmatches I forced him to take part in… All this ‘Pokemon-Amie’ does is take that feature a few steps further. Interacting with your Pokemon and making him happy feels all the better when in the next five minutes you have them getting repeatedly ‘boulder smashed’ by a serpent made out of pure pain and sharp rocks.
Game Freak really came out of it’s claustrophobic little shell this time, with new, brave steps into mysterious planes, the addition of many new features which could make or break ties with the fandom and entirely new ways to feel closer than ever to your cute companions. The 'formula' for X and Y has been shaken up, and I'm very excited for how it will affect the game. I do hope this large gamble will pay off, and I know I’ll definitely be buying it. Well… as soon as I’m able to make money, that is.
