State of Decay for the Xbox 360.
Press play then read on.
I could have chose any number of highly regarded titles but I choose this game because I simply had the best experience with it. It sucked me in like no game has in a long time. It had a killer original soundtrack, good graphics, and was a true survival/horror game. Few games in recent memory have such a lasting effect on me. From the subtle nods to popular zombie film to the general atmosphere of a world ravaged by a zombie apocalypse everything felt desperate, dangerous, and believable.
I know some of you might think I'm crazy to put this game higher than say, GTAV but State of Decay is a $20 game that offers a bottomless survival/horror sandbox like I have never ever seen. It's an experience like I have never had. It takes something as cliche as a zombie apocalypse and makes you face all the reasons why you should dread such a scenario and while you get this at a seemingly "flavor of the month" price this particular flavor will have you coming back for seconds, thirds, etc.
Bub Approves.
The biggest compliment I can give this game is that it had me talking outside the self confinement of my inner social circle. I told my parents, by friends, strangers, my wife, you guys, all about State of Decay off and on leading up to it's release and non-stop in the weeks afterwards.
My favorite moment: Earlier in the game when I went out at night, alone, for supplies. I made too much noise while searching a dresser and before I knew it the house was surrounded with the undead. In a panic I began boarding up windows and fumbling through my inventory in an effort to think of a plan that would see me safe at home, with the loot. I won't tell you how it ended but it was the kind of rush I haven't experienced from a single-player video game in years. That is why it's my game of the year.
Putting the horror in survival and the survival back into horror. State of Decay: GOTY 2013.
