I have three things on my "movie agenda" at the mo' so I'm going to try the ocean finance method of consolidating all my movie thoughts into one easily payable thread post. so here goes...
Item number one: The developing pattern in movies.
The last two years (2012-2014) have been rocky for movies. But I've picked out a weird pattern. the early months of the year is mostly full of uninteresting movies, some bad some OK, then we move into the summer months and we get a load of shit blockbusters with only one or two being remotely good, autumn is mostly uninteresting then winter creeps in and BOOM we have some oscar winning movies on our case.
In 2012 our shit blockbusters were Prometheus, The Hunger Games and Brave. the good ones were the avengers and dark knight rises. The winter greats were, Lincoln and Les Miserables.
In 2013 we had, Man of Steel, oz the great and powerful and Iron Man 3 being horrible. But then we had Star Trek and Gravity to enjoy so it was all fine (and some others but we will get to that in item 2...). The winter was great last year as well with stuff like the Dallas Buyers Club and 12 years a Slave.
It might just be me but it is definitely very fishy...
Item number two: the emergence of the "surprised it didn't suck" category.
I dunno...it might be after the disappointment that is Prometheus we, as movie goers, became extremely cynical. We saw the trailers for World War Z, the Wolverine and (in my case at least) catching fire and thought "it'll be shit". Some of us then said "ok I'll give it a go" and lo and behold they exceeded our expectations. I didn't see WWZ at the cinema (I have see it since though) but I did see The Wolverine and Catching Fire and I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't waste my money...so that was good.
Item number three: The TFiOS movie.
The Faults in Our Stars is a movie adaptation of a book written by one of the Vlog Brothers, John Green. I love the Vlog Brothers and I'm even subbed to John's world history channel, which I watch regularly. I haven't read the book but I heard it's good, sounds like it has some interesting ideas and plays with a lot of deep concepts. I just can't help watching the Trailer and thinking "this is going to suck". I want it to do well, and by the look of the fan base it no doubt will, but I'm terrified if it does suck. I'm terrified because I have the compulsion to say if a movie sucks or not regardless of the fan base. The last time I did this was with the hunger games movie and the only way I could get that fan base off my back was saying that the sequel, catching fire, was a really good movie (and I wasn't lying either, it is legitimately good). I really want TFiOS not to be shit I really do but if it does I don't know what I'll fear more, that fan base or my own conscience...so yeah...that's a predicament.
