I'm at a bit of a crossroads atm. Majora's Mask 3D releases in about a week and here I am stuck an original launch 3DS, a console that I've never been a huge fan of; the system itself is too small as are the screens and the battery life is terrible. Does anyone own/have any experience with the XL or even the New 3DS? If so would you recommend either? I'm contemplating an upgrade because I don't want my experience of MM 3DS to be hampered by the hardware I'm playing it on. At the same time I don't know if I can justify spending $200 for a bigger system and a game.

Short Answer: Upgrade to 3DSXL. There are lots of affordable limited editions (ZeldaLBW consoles are still widely available in USA) of the console for around $200 or you can get a standard edition for as low as $120 if you shop around. In my opinion it's a better designed console, I can play with the 3D off for about 8-hours between charges and I just love it. Long Answer: First off, I started my venture into the DS family with a DSi and have owned both a 3DS and 3DSXL. One thing is sure, the XL is worth the extra $$ for the extra screen space and you will NEVER want to go back to the smaller screen afterwards. EVER! Going from the 3DS to the 3DSXL was a night and day difference and it's now my ideal layout for the console, even when compared to the NEW 3DS. I imagine the real issue here is that you're stuck between whether to get the old XL or the New XL. Unless you are really interested in 3DS version of Xenoblade coming out in a couple months which I should mention, you can play on the Wii/WiiU right now, I would go with the 3DS XL. I don't see the the New 3DS having more than a handful of games that take advantage of the extra processing power to the extent of being exclusives. It would be foolish for Nintendo to make an exclusive killer-app in the vain of a completely original 3D Zelda adventure for New 3DS. It's just not that big of an upgrade and they would lose money on that type of investment. An extra analog nub, two extra shoulder buttons, and a faster processor are nice but not worth even $100 in my opinion. IF it was a whole new system with double the power of 3DS, it would make sense. New 3DS is the DSi of this generation. I'm boarderline ranting at this point but what I don't like about the New 3DS mostly falls in the design category. The placement of the power button, gamecard slot, stylus, and start/select buttons on the New model are just illogical. What were they thinking!?! The 3DSXL was perfect in having the stylus right by the ABXY buttons for easy access and having the card slot hidden behind the screen and out of the way was ideal. The start/select buttons were under the bottom screen and out of the way as well and the power button was on the bottom face. That was so nice. I don't know about you, but I like an many buttons as possible to be protected in the clam-shell design when not in use. The 3DSXL is slick and probably my most ideal handheld gaming system I've ever played when considering design alone.

Thanks for the input, Blade. Still undecided though. If by some miracle I can find the MM-themed New 3DS at launch I'll go for it. If not I may go with the regular XL as you suggested or just wait.

Yeah don't get me wrong. If $100 isn't alot of money to you and you can trade in your old 3DS for a discounted New 3DS then you might as well go for it instead of paying the same price for an older model. On the flip side, if you can get brand new a Link Between Worlds 3DS XL, and the Majoras Mask game for around $200 then I would go for that option for a cooler looking, better designed, 3DS and more game for your dollar. I went shopping for you and local stores might be a better way to go in finding one of those limited editions at that price otherwise a standard model, and Majoras mask will probably set you back about $180 if your buying brand new. Shop around. I saw this really cool New Super Mario Bros. 2 Gold edition 3DS XL for $185 on amazon.com. What makes it special in my opinion is that it's the same 3ds Miyamoto pulled out of his jacket pocket in this video... What? Yes, I want the same 3DS design Miyamoto carries around in his jacket! lol Finally, be sure to consider that the Majoras Mask New 3DS doesn't come with the actual game so you would be paying $40 for the game on top of the $200 console if you could find it. My local GameStop sold out of them in 24hrs.

It looks like Nintendo will be taking all my rupees this Friday. Against my better judgement I'm going to try and get the MM N3DS. Going by this thread on Reddit it looks as if many Target stores are getting a few in stock. It's a long shot I know, but I'm sure I'll be able to find at least one local store that has them. Chances are I'll be standing out in the cold Friday morning to get one. There's no doubt that the regular XL is the cheaper option. I even have a few Amazon gift cards that could bring the price down to around $100. I just dislike the idea of buying a console when I know a newer, better iteration of it is already on shelves. Anyway, I'll be sure to let you all know what I think of the console if I do snag one.

For sure. I only recommend the old 3dsxl if you can get it for less than $150. Anymore than that, and it doesn't make sense not to spend a little more for the latest iteration. Too bad about that design though.

If so that's a really good deal. Kind of ridiculous that the game won't come pre-installed on US versions.

Anymore, people buy Nintendo stuff (not games) because of their rarity rather than their quality and it's sad that there are people out their willing to pay almost triple the suggested retail price for those things.
I'll never forget how much I was looking forward to the $40 port of Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii a few years back and how I couldn't find a copy for less than $90 due to limited quantities. Scalpers gonna scale. If theirs a market, products gonna move....
Two weeks ago I had a shot at spending $400 at my local GameStop for two Majoras Mask 3DS consoles, of which I would sell one for $400 and keep one, no money down. Then, right there at the checkout counter something ticked and I passed on the opportunity. Stupid financial move, I know, but I wasn't about to buy-in on Nintendos game and become a scalper just because I've been burned in the past and know how this stuff works.... idealistic as it may be, it was the right thing to do in my opinion.
I'll buy a quality Nintendo product, play it, love it, and support it as long as I live.

In the end scalping only hurts those who actually want or care about the thing being scalped. If only consumers would stop enabling them.

Yeah, besides it's just a skin that doesn't effect functionality or anything, Super Mario All-Stars on the other hand..... it's a shame. Would of been nice to have all that on one disc. I just got done having a conversation about this and I was singing praise on Nintendo for keeping new games available for download. Finding a new copy of Ocarina of Time 3D is getting harder and harder buts it's still available on shop. Why not do that with All-Stars? Dem graphics.

I didn't get scalped by re-sellers, but I DID buy it from Nintendo for about £220 on Amazon, which is about $334 give or take... Apparently it was cheaper on Amazon.fr but they were sold out by the time I heard about that

$334? That's $134 more than retail. That's what the scalpers are getting for it now. I'm tempted to stop by my local target this Friday.

Managed to get my hands on the MM N3DS. Went to a Target in a relatively remote part of town and stood in line for 30 minutes to get one of the only two consoles they had. I completely lucked out.
Playing around with MM and the system as I speak. I'll be sure to post my impressions of both later.
