If anyone hasn't played this I would really recommend them to check it out, you can get a brand new copy on ebay for around £7. It feels great playing a classic FPS game, Serious Sam 3: BFE was made in 2011 so it is probably the newest old school FPS game I have played The biggest difference I have found while playing this game is you don't spend every other minute hiding behind cover waiting for your health to regen! This is pure run and gun gameplay.

I remember playing the demo for I think it was Serious Sam 1.?.
It was something like this.
I remember thinking how old-school and simple it felt. You went from section to section of the level clearing out the whole room to get to the next section. Very simplistic but I really liked the engine. Everything accept the walls was destructible which was so nice and refreshing. Even the most recent FPS games still don't have that level of destructibility anymore. Not unless it's a major part of the game at least.
Slightly off topic: It doesn't have to be a sim but I always imagined a true sequel to Perfect Dark would use shooting out lights and the like as a means of stealth and awareness. Broken glass on the floor or bullet holes in the wall would put enemies who saw it on high alert and their reaction times to spotting you would be decreased. Shooting out lights would give you the opportunity to blind-side them and slow their reaction time to shoot you so you could get the upper hand. Imagine a first-person cross between Metal Gear and Splinter Cell but with the option just go Rambo on easier difficulties. Oh yeah.

The truth is I still haven't played the first one, the versions on the xbox I have played of 2 and 3 are HD remakes, although they are nicer looking than the above video they are still very basic but lots of fun.
At the off topic part It pretty much sound like you are describing Splinter Cell, I know you mention that in the post but.... why not just play Splinter Cell.lol

I see the Serious Sam game as a 1st person Shump if you know what I mean. You know the old arcade "shootem up" space games where waves of things come flying at you? Its that in first person. It works very well and is unique.

It works very well and is unique. I know what you mean but I just need to say: Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Goldeneye, were all that Serious Sam kind of game. They all get clumped together as games where the only objective is to "kill everything". I think it's demeaning to the quality of these old FPS games to look at them and say "they didn't know what they were doing back then" and consider them just pioneers of the genre. Then the same people turn around and call games like Halo, COD, Battlefield, etc. "serious" AAA games. If you played Goldeneye between 1997 and 2001 you were the hardest of the hardcore gamer. I just hate it when people look at these games and call them over-the-top, silly, retro, when FPS games haven't changed accept by getting easier and more cinematic. Other than those were still playing Goldeneye 18 years later.

If Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Goldeneye, and Serious Sam are games where the only objective is to "kill everything" then... Resident Evil 4, Gears of War, Dead Space, Bioshock and all Call of Duty are games where the only objective is to "kill everything"

I think thats what people think of those early FPS games. Especially with anyone younger than us, they either don't know anything about them or only know of the controversy games like Doom caused with "realistic gun violence" and extreme amounts of blood and gore".
Super tame by today's standards, but today's shooters get the rep of being far more sophisticated due to their cinematic stories and open spaces. Those older games mainly consisted of corridors where blasting an enemy in the face with a shot gun (to a bloody big mess) happens alot more than it does in today's modern FPS. The latest COD doesn initially feel like a game that's only objective is to "kill everything" because there is so much going on around you it plays out like a PG13 action movie.

I know it might not feel like the newest COD game is just a "kill everything" game, maybe even Res 4 and Gears of War. When you strip it down to the actual gameplay all you are doing is killing enemies.
What I like about Duke Nukem, Goldeneye, and Serious Sam is it cuts out the bullshit and just gives you what you want.

Duke Nukem was also very big on making fun of pop culture at the time... LOADS of movie references in that game

Well worth a play, I am quite enjoying the 3rd one, as Silent Sputnik said it is a bit slow to get started. You start off with a sledge hammer for the first 10 mins then you have to use a pistol for the next 40 mins. I finally have a shotgun and it is getting really fun. I kind of miss that progression, modern games just start you off with a machine gun. I think most of the above games are co-op, if anyone gets them let me know. I think I played the 2nd one co-op and it was quite fun

JMM, if you could recommend ONE of them which one is the best as far as gameplay and over all "fun" value. I would like to take advantage of this deal but being on a budget I may need to restrain myself to just one for now, from the list above.
Also, I love pistols. Ya know, I grew up on the PP7, Falcon 2, and M6D from Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Halo respectively. In every COD I ever play I have obliterated my K/D (not that I care) trying to play with a loadout based around a pistol. It makes no sense how nerfed pistols are in today's games.

Actually, in Battlefield Hardline, pistols work pretty well... My friend unlocked the Bald Eagle for the Enforcer class and it drops people in one or two hits

JMM, if you could recommend ONE of them which one is the best as far as gameplay and over all "fun" value. UMMMMM I am really sorry I find this hard to answer, I really enjoyed SS2 but Silent Sputnik had a pretty strong opinion that SS3 is the best, as I haven't played SS3 enough I can't compare it... also I haven't played SS1! I guess what I am saying is I am not the best person to ask! BUT I found SS2 a lot of fun to play How much does each game work out on sale? The whole collection is $9.96 on amazon new, I guess you could get it even cheaper 2nd hand on ebay. www.amazon.com/Serious-Sam-Collection-Xbox-360/dp/B00C3MK9BS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428523774&sr=8-1&keywords=serious+sam+collection+360Edit* Oh and to answer your question about the pistol IMO the pistol in SS2 is much better, it is more satisfying to use. It feels like the pistol in SS3 lets you hit whatever is on the screen like auto aim. SS2 Revolver SS3 Desert Eagle Also you can dual wield the revolver, I haven't got to dual wield the Degale yet. I think I should play them all the way through and do a series review. (don't hold your breath)

The whole digital bundle, at the sale price, would run me about $13 so just picking up the physical copy would be a better deal. I'll consider it. I just thought spending 3 dollars now, would give me an idea on weather or not I want to spend another $10 for the rest of the series. I already have too many cheap games sitting on my hard drive I have yet to touch.
