While I enjoy the Windwaker art style, I prefer the gritty realism look that Twilight Princess had

I felt pretty restricted playing Twilight Princess like loads of it was blocked off, once you got a sail and a boat in WW you were free to go anywhere!

Yeah, the map in TP did feel pretty small, but it looked awesome at least

Yeah, the map in TP did feel pretty small, but it looked awesome at least Actually the map felt large in my opinion. The problem was that it was this huge epic place but not many actual places to go. or rahter, only one way to get the the them. It wasnt as big as they would have you believe.

Yeah, I would have liked more places to just discover randomly while exploring... Caves with a few monsters guarding a rupee chest even, 'cus we all love them

another thing I like in the Zelda games: a diverse set of art styles.

I think Skyward Sword nailed it. At least for the "Modern" perceptions of what a Zelda game "should look like."
Of course, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask will ALWAYS be my favorites when it comes to both story and art style.

Wind Waker needed more temples. There was barely anything worthwhile to explore either. All the islands outside of Outset Island, Dragonroost, Windset, and Forest Haven were pointlessly small. To me Zelda is all about exploration, or at least should be. Sailing an empty sea was not satisfying. Just my opinion based on what I look for in a Zelda game.
The temples that were there were high quality and the story was probably the best in the series [edit]and the art style was nice[edit] but I still rank it below most of the other Zeldas.
Ocarina of Time, Link to the Past, Majora's Mask, Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, Adventure of Link. That's how I'd rank the major games in the series I think.

Skyward Sword ranks that low for you? I loved it, would definitely be near the top for me...

The sailing was the best part for me, if you didnt like it I can see why you dont rate it very highly but for me that was the thing that set it apart from other Zeldas. Unlike walking or riding 5 mins across a field you spent 30 minutes using a map and a compass sailing across unknown waters and they made it fun with enemy and games to play on the way.
