There are one or two aspects of the predecessor (Oblivion) that I prefer to Skyrim, like the fact you had to specialize in Oblivion, where as in Skyrim you can be the Arch Mage of the college, Guild Master of the Thieves Guild, the Listener of the Brotherhood and the leader of the Companions (Skyrim's Fighter's Guild kind of thing) all with the same character in a very short space of time, considering the quest chains for all of them are extremely short you spend most of the time traveling to the locations. At least in Oblivion each quest chain took five times as long.
Still love Skyrim though. Amazing game.

You're supposed to specialize in Skyrim, just like you were forced to in Oblivion, but you now have the option of "going legendary" (think prestige from call of duty) and reassigning those skills and traits to play as another class. Yes, you can be a battle mage in Skyrim. But if you focus your skills and traits into either the warrior or mage attributes, your character will be twice as strong. So yeah, you can play the way you want to. But to get the most bang for you buck, you still need to specialize.

Despite loving Fallout 3 and Oblivion I actually didn't care for Skyrim. Melee combat wasn't fun and the quests didn't keep me interested.
I totally get why you all like it though and it's a godsend in the era of "cinematic" games and linear corridor shooters.

Melee combat wasn't fun and the quests didn't keep me interested. I found it to be largely similar to Oblivion's combat. Although the whole "I'm out of potions, better use double heal spell" tactic is a little OP.... Totally fair if you're fighting a dragon priest though.

For some reason I was never bothered by it in Oblivion though. Perhaps because Cyrodiil was more interesting to me and the quests felt more varied. The fetch quests in Skyrim got old pretty damn quick. Honestly I think I'm just tired of the whole Bethesda approach to games. I'm all for open-world sandboxes, but Beth's games can be hard to stomach if you aren't completely obsessive-compulsive.

I liked Skyrim. The idea. The story. But the engine just wasn't there. Maybe for magic, but again, melee combat felt like you were just waving a packet of crisps at the enemy. It felt about as meaty as a stick of celery. And for a game based around climbing mountains, It doesn't really help to have the characters jumping around as though they were in zero gravity.

SOMEDAY I'll get into Skyrim... someday I have it, Morrowind and Oblivion on my games list, but I've yet to start any of them because I know they'll be huge time-sinks

Doesnt The Elder Scrolls V predate game of thrones? I could be wrong, I have never watched game of thrones. IMO Lord of The Rings, Dark Souls, Skyrim all rip each other off. Yes the Lord of The Rings books were out first but the movies would have got inspiration from everything else visual.

Lol IMO. They ALL rip off of Lord of the Rings and the fantasy basis that series popularized. Yes. the Movies rejuvenated the strictly fantasy genre in a way nothing before it ever did and was one of the pioneer franchises thats genre now dominate the box office landscape.
Game of Thrones came out 7 months before Skyrim. Considering the sheer size of project Skyrim was I very much doubt the writers borrowed too much of what they saw in the show. In reviews for Skyrim it was oft compared due to the budding popularity of the series at the time. Had it been released 10 years ago it would have been compared to LOTR and would most likely been seen as an attempt to make money off the the then-current popularity.
I'm saying Lord of the Rings was first in both cases and I doubt Skyrim ripped off Game of Thrones I would bet they both ripped off of the fantasy setting from Lord of the Rings.
Considering the quality and popularity of all three franchises I have no problem with any one coexisting. That is how new and better things are created.
Game of thrones was based off of a book series created in the 90's. Having seen the show and played the game I don't see a connection other than the setting.

Yeah but I will bet the Game of Thrones books were influenced by the Lord of The Rings books just like every Sci fi movie is influenced by Star Wars and Blade Runner.

No argument there. I just don't see nor appreciate Thrones and Skyrim being clumped together as one capitalizing off the other when they are two great things in there own right and probably both ripped off of LOTR rather than each other.

personally i don't think lord of the rings and game of thrones really have anything in common story wise. To me its kind of like comparing the sopranos with and Sherlock Holmes both might be set in a crime atmosphere but both are also very different

Yes yes yes yes yes The engine is AWFUL. I can't believe that most of you actually enjoy TES games. o.o
