Touted as the first shared-world shooter, this is Bungie's first game since leaving Halo in 2010. It can be played alone or with friends. It requires you to be connected to the internet at all times.

The Beta is expected to start sometime in the next few months. As early as mid May, but probably no later than mid August. To gain access to the beta you have to pre-order the game at a participating retailer such as Gamestop, EB Games, Game, Amazon, JB Hi-Fi, Best Buy, Walmart, and ASDA. There are still plenty of beta codes for all four platforms. After you pre-order you will get a code either from your retailer or via email shortly after your pre-order confirmation. You can submit the code here to reserve your spot in the beta test.

Why are we as consumers expected to pay for the privilege of testing a game we or may or may not like? Why has this become an acceptable practice? Seriously, if developers and publishers are interested in making the best possible game, they'd get a beta into the hands of as many people as possible by making it free. The purpose of a beta isn't to sell the final product, but rather to iron out game balance and fix unforeseen bugs/glitches in order to make the final product as good as possible. It's pretty sad that publishers these days use betas (often just glorified demos) to sell more copies of a promise they've yet to deliver on. It's more anti-consumer bullshit if you ask me. /rant Game looks decent though

I agree for the most part. I think there is something that makes this "okay" and in a way not "okay" because it's almost never okay to expect a consumer to buy a product to try it... but.
First and foremost, you can cancel your pre-order after the beta if you really didn't like it. That isn't my primary reason though. In all honesty I don't shy away from Bose speakers or Zippo Lighters just because I didn't try before I buy.
I mean, Bungie has developed 5 games in the last decade and hasn't made a single sub-par title in all this time. In fact a few of those titles have somewhat revolutionized the way we play all games in the genre today, made millions upon millions of dollars and legions of followers. I have almost no problem in paying for access to this beta anymore than access to a GTA Online beta or a Zippo Lighter, or a set of Bose speakers. These developers and engineers have a track record you can't buy and a standard of excellence that gives me no reason not to pay up front for what I am confident will be at most a revolutionary FPS, and at least a solid action experience.
Now if Sledgehammer games wants me to pay for access to the Modern Warfare 4 beta they are freakin crazy.

If there was a proper Perfect Dark sequel coming out I would pay full price for a beta.lol As for Destiny, it is a game I cant get excited for saying as I don't own a next gen console. For now I will stick to playing games on my nearly 9 year old console.... the Xbox 360!

After all i should note that personally I'm on the fence about the game as a whole. An always online Halo Reach isnt my idea of innovation I can't miss, nor am I interested in paying the asking price up front for more of the same Bungie shooter. I said "Bungie better re-invent the FPS wheel with Halo: Reach" back in 2009. I bought Reach anyway with it being a very similar "wheel" and played it for about 2 months. Considering Destiny 2 is going to be exclusive to next gen, the online only requirement, and it just looking like more Reach, I'm hesitant about even trying out the beta. Note: Until I personally own a next-gen console, all games I talk about on the forum will be for current gen. Next gen is either a benefit or a hazard. If it's a benefit it's not my problem.

There is no harm in talking about games even if you cant play them. I cant make up my mind about Destiny at all. So Bungie decided to stop making halo games so they could.... make a halo type game....

It's all they know...
Just wanted to say, I have no problem talking about games I can't play but If I'm ignorant to a game I won't sacrifice my integrity to talk like I know about a game. That's what makes us great. A community for us by us means we talk about the games we know, love, and are excited for rather than reporting on and trying to start a conversation about ever half-hyped game that comes about.
We can do just about all the things our constituents do without professionalism, money, and obligation to report on everything getting in the way of just being a community of people who have similar interests. Sorry to go all mission statement on you.

Ya know. They went muliplatform and for some reason I thought it wouldn't feel so dirty. Like they first time I played a Sega game on Gamecube.
When Sony.... I'll used the word dragged. When Sony dragged Bungies head developers out onto the stage at the PS4 reveal it was mortifying. Like they were saying it without saying it, Microsoft's best weapon was now Sony's and it just felt... wrong.

A good bit of news, you will be able to transfer your progress from Current gen to Next gen as confirmed by a statement by Bungie's Tyson Green:
"We're interested in making sure that last gen character can move to next gen, a lot of people are going to buy Destiny on PS3 or Xbox 360 and then get a PS4 for Christmas. Don't tell me I wasted those last 100 hours there. So we're really interested in supporting that. Our longer-term platform plans, I couldn't speak to right now. But we don't want to lock people in."
